Cat Ba National Park is 30 km east of the port city of Hai Phong, along with the World Heritage landscape of Ha Long Bay. The main island covers 28,000 ha and the park is 26,300 ha, comprising 17,300 ha on the main including one small island to the east and 9,000 ha of adjacent inshore waters (WCMC). The southern and part of the eastern side of the island is inhabited. A west-northwest to east-southeast road, clearly visible on the map, connects some of the southern villages. Travel to Cat Ba is by boat. A large vessel docks at Cat Ba town, but it is also possible to catch smaller vessels to the west end of the island.
The island contains the only known population of the endangered leaf-eating monkey, Trachypithecus francoisi poliocephalus.
Cat Ba Island is part of the City of Hai Phong. Ha Long Bay and the smaller surrounding islands belong to Quang Ninh Province.
The Quang Ninh coastline map series covers the region directly north of Cat Ba Island.
