|

The World Conservation Union (IUCN) organized the 4th Asia Regional
Conservation Forum in early September in Kathmandu, Nepal. Held
every four years, it provides a platform to discuss innovative
conservation approaches, share regional experiences, and build
partnership for future action in Asia.
“Water Partnership ‘Water for Food and Ecosystems (WFE)’ Vietnam
– Netherlands”, a new initiative that IUCN is involved in, is Viet
Nam Government’s latest effort to address the question of how sustainable
water management can simultaneously support adequate food production
and healthy ecosystems.
Fires
in forests are an ecological process and effective fire management
should endeavour to exploit the positive role of fires while mitigating
its negative impacts.
A
series of Regional Roundtable Discussions to address Asian regional
biodiversity and sustainable development issues was started with
the first one in early this September. The workshop was focused
on “Biodiversity Corridors: current status and directions”. 
Forty
eight essays and 108 paintings about marine turtles and their habitats
from junior high school pupils on Minh Chau Island in the gulf
of Tonkin were judged this September by a committee of environmental
and community education activists, local conservationists, teachers,
and representative from IUCN Viet Nam. 
Strengthening
Voices for Better Choices (SVBC) programme partners from around
the world met in Brazil this September to strategize how to institute
improved forest governance in the Global South. 
An environment prize has been established under the annual Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards for the first time in Viet Nam
this year by IUCN. The aim of the prize is to raise awareness of
the importance of environmental protection and ecosystem conservation
for sustainable development in the Vietnamese business community. 
Training
workshops to improve the capacity of local actors to implement
Agenda 21 priorities were jointly organized by IUCN and the Agenda
21 Office for Yen Bai and Ca Mau provinces in August and September,
2007.
Viet
Nam faces considerable challenges to effectively safeguarding biodiversity
in the country. The incorporation of Payment for Environmental
Services (PES) in the under-construction Viet Nam Biodiversity
Law represents a mechanism to meet these challenges. 
IUCN Viet Nam’s Strategic Framework 2007-2010 prioritizes the
issues of governance, environmental planning, environmental services,
and climate change.
A training course on writing skills was held for IUCN staff this September under the guidance of a regional trainer in the field of communication for development .

When
I first came to IUCN Viet Nam, it was a confusing place. The people
traveled extensively – Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang, Vietienne,
Phom Phenh, Bangkok and even farther afield – coming and going
from the office daily. Acronyms fly about even faster than people.
IUCN Viet Nam works on almost too many projects to count.
