Corridors: Status and direction
A
series of Regional Roundtable Discussions to address Asian regional
biodiversity and sustainable development issues was started with
the first one in early this September. The workshop was focused
on “Biodiversity Corridors: current status and directions”.
This
is one effort of the Asia Regional Biodiversity Conservation Program
(ARBCP) to foster improved regional communication and more effective
regional programming, to address relevant biodiversity and sustainable
development issues.

Helping hands needed: Marine turtles and their habitats
Forty
eight essays and 108 paintings about marine turtles and their habitats
from junior high school pupils on Minh Chau Island in the gulf
of Tonkin were judged this September by a committee of environmental
and community education activists, local conservationists, teachers,
and representative from IUCN Viet Nam.

The SVBC project

Greening private
sector: IUCN celebrates best environmental practices
An environment prize has been established under the annual Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) Awards for the first time in Viet Nam
this year by IUCN. The aim of the prize is to raise awareness of
the importance of environmental protection and ecosystem conservation
for sustainable development in the Vietnamese business community.

Making Payment for Environmental Services feasible
Viet
Nam faces considerable challenges to effectively safeguarding biodiversity
in the country. The incorporation of Payment for Environmental
Services (PES) in the under-construction Viet Nam Biodiversity
Law represents a mechanism to meet these challenges.
PES is a new
concept in Viet Nam. It rewards those involved in conservation
activities by providing payment for valuable goods and services
that result from the activities.

IUCN Viet Nam’s Strategic Framework 2007-2010 prioritizes the
issues of governance, environmental planning, environmental services,
and climate change.
After ten months of comprehensive internal reflection and external
consultation with the Government of Vietnam, donors, IUCN members,
and key stakeholders, IUCN Viet Nam launched its Strategic Framework
for 2007-2010 in July.
