Australia Vietnam Science-Technology Link

More Information on AVSL

Purpose

The Australia-Vietnam Science Link is a non-profit, professional organisation which promotes scientific and technical cooperation between Australia and Vietnam. Originally called the Australian Committee for Scientific Cooperation with Vietnam, when formed in 1982, the organisation was modelled after the US Committee. We are non-political and have been affiliated with the Australia-Vietnam Society. The Australia-Vietnam Society disbanded during 1995 after 20 years of working in Vietnam. [It is replaced, in part, by the Vietnam Studies Association of Australia.] In 1989 I was appointed AVSL Chairperson and asked to do things. I did try but it wasn't easy. This is me in the photo at the left.

We had trouble trying to produce a formal organisation with a set program. We could not maintain the staff necessary to do all the things we wanted. Advisors still will advise but they do so independently -- which is very good. We are left with a few people who have a continuing interest in the organisation. I as Chairman tend to work towards my own ends - environment and sustainable development. Rob Hurle (Treasurer, photo on the right) has as one main interest the Internet link to Vietnam. <rob@coombs.anu.edu.au>

This does not mean that we cannot contemplate more meetings or a range of new tasks for AVSL. We merely need your help to achieve these things. We are happy to help you do things you think are appropriate. That is a no-frills approach to NGO operation.

Chair, AVSL
