Ginninderra Press, described in The Canberra Times as 'versatile and visionary', is owned by Stephen Matthews, a well known book reviewer with
extensive experience in teaching, bookselling and editing. In October 1997, Stephen won a Canberra Critics Circle Award for Literature 'for his tireless contribution to the writing community.'
Ginninderra Press offers expert editing and proofreading at very competitive
rates as well as simple design and lay out services.
Ginninderra Press also recognises the fact that many people have good ideas for
books but cannot get them published, either because of their inexperience in
preparing manuscripts or because the potential sales are insufficient to
interest a conventional publisher.
Ginninderra Press offers an expert manuscript assessment service: writers can get helpful comment and practical
advice on the content, structure and readership suitability of their
manuscripts and informed suggestions on which publishers to approach.
What makes Ginninderra Press really different, however, is its intention to use simple formats to publish books of specialist interest and to market them directly to small target readerships. After collaborating with writers in the
creative development of their ideas, Ginninderra Press can design and lay out
manuscripts, devise and implement appropriate direct marketing strategies and
then print and bind copies to order.
After graduating from Cambridge University, Stephen Matthews, was a teacher in
the UK and Australia for nearly twenty years. He then had a very successful
bookselling career, for some years managing the ANU Co-op, one of Australia's
largest bookshops.
A specialist in children's literature, Stephen regularly contributes book reviews, author profiles and articles to The Canberra Times and Australian Book Review and has written manuscript reports for several large publishers. He has been a judge for several literary awards and competitions and has for many years been involved with the Word Festival Canberra.
Stephen has edited Eye of the Soul, a collection of interviews with writers for children and young adults, to be published in 1998 by Magpies magazines.
