What's New in WWW Asian Studies Newsletter

This Newsletter is a part of the Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library

Edited by: Dr T.Matthew Ciolek

The "What's New in WWW Asian Studies" Online Newsletter (ISSN 1323-9368) was established in April 1994. Resources listed in this Newsletter are inspected and rated in terms of the quality, overall reliability and usefulness of their content to the social sciences' research in Asia-Pacific region. All ratings are carried out on a 5 point scale [essential - v.useful - useful - interesting - feeble]. The ratings are correct for the date a resource is listed in this Newsletter, reflect the Editor's judgment without 'fear or favour', and are not subject to pleas or negotiations.

The newsletter is provided by the Coombs Computing Unit, Research Schools of Social Sciences & Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University (ANU), Canberra as a service to the World Wide Web community.

1997: Countdown to History
South China Morning Post (SCMP), Hong Kong
After 155 years of British Colonial rule, Hong Kong will become a Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China on July 1, 1997. For the next 50 years, Hong Kong will maintain its promised "high degree of autonomy", under the "one country, two systems" principle China espoused in the Joint Declaration it signed with Britain and China on December 19, 1984. For all the information you need to understand this historic event, explore the following sections: Timeline, Changes, The Sino-British Joint Declaration, Business Issues, The Basic Law, Views and Opinions. Supplement Chinese Character Set for Buddhist Text
National Taiwan Univ., Taiwan
The problem of missing character ("gaiji" in Japanese) is always a severe one in the process of electronizing Chinese Buddhist texts. Understanding the need for a set of missing Chinese characters, The Center for Buddhist Studies (http://ccbs.ntu.edu.tw/), National Taiwan University, called a meeting last year to promote the making of Chinese missing characters for Buddhist Texts. During the conference Dr. Hsueh and his staff in Academia Sinica took the full responsibility to produce a set of "Supplement Character Set for Buddhist Text" with the cooperation of many other organizations, such as Fo-kung-san, Si-lien Monastery, Electronic Buddhadharma Society (EBS), Taipei Youth Buddhist Association, etc. After nearly 2 years' work, the "Supplement Character Set for Chinese Buddhist Text" with 2037 missing Chinese characters (or gaiji in Japanese) finally comes out. It contents a glyph data base that implements in IBM compatible PC with Windows 3.1 operating system and with Chinese Extension (Taiwan Version). Moreover, it is specially designed for the majority-use Big-5 Code.
