What's New in WWW Asian Studies Newsletter

Editor: Dr T.Matthew Ciolek (tmciolek@coombs.anu.edu.au), Coombs Computing Unit, Research Schools of Social Sciences & Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University, Canberra.

The "What's New in WWW Asian Studies" online newsletter (ISSN 1323-9368) was established in April 1994. The newsletter is a part of the Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library and is provided by the Australian National University (ANU) as a service to the World Wide Web community. Announcements published in this Newsletter are also disseminated on the network via an electronic mailing list "asia-www-gopher-news-l@coombs.anu.edu.au". The complete set of the news is also available from the ANU-Asia-WWW-Gopher-News-L dbase.

The National Library of Australia has recently put a large part of its Pictorial Collection onto the WWW. The site contains about 13,500 Australian historical images - native flora and fauna, voyages of Captain Cook, prime ministers, famous and ordinary Australians, historical events and the Australian way of life. There are also many contemporary images as well as pictures on the exploration of New Zealand and the Pacific, all fully indexed. 'Images 1' offers a gallery of online images from paintings, drawings, objects and photographs to rare prints. Readers can print the online order forms and request reproductions by mail.

Ulysses: Interactive Tool for Census Data Analysis
Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), USA
A statistical analysis engine for census, demographic, and other tabular data. Ulysses includes the 1% Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) from the U. S. Bureau of the Census, and the 1982 Census from China. Ulysses produces statistics and cross-tabulations on values in records selected from these datasets using complex selection criteria, typically in a few seconds on datasets containing several million records.
