The Size of Asian Cyberspace 1997-1999

collection of statistical data."
Coverage: All countries of Asian continent; nine (9) measurements
taken at half-yearly intervals - Feb 97; Sep 97; Dec 97; Mar 98; Jun
98; Sep 98; Dec 98; Mar 99; Jun 99.
[In Feb 97 Altavista kept track of 5.2 mln English language web pages
dealing with Asian countries. Approx 43% of this materials dealt with
countries from East Asia, 25% from SEA, 18% from Middle East, 12% from
South Asia, 1% from Central Asia, and 1% from the Caucasus. In Jun 99
there were 22.5 mln of such web pages; with the regional percentages
being: EA 37%, SEA 22%, Middle East 25%, South Asia 13%, Central Asia
2%, and the Caucasus 1%. The data show that during the last 28 months
the overall size of Asian cyberspace has grown 303 percent. At the
same time, the number of web pages dealing with East Asia grew from
2.2 mln to 8.3 mln, i.e. 276 percent; that dealing with China grew
from 709,000 to 2.8 mln, i.e. 306 percent; and that dealing with Tibet
grew from 39,000 to 212,000, or 443 percent - ed.]
