Yousef Jameel Centre for Islamic and Asian Art, U. of Oxford
The Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK.
Self-description:
"The Yousef Jameel Centre for Islamic and Asian Art provides online access to the Ashmolean Museum's Eastern Art department collections.
As part of the University of Oxford, the collections hold particular value for teaching and research, but they also appeal to visitors who may not be as familiar with the material. This project aims to open up the collections and enable everyone to find what they are interested in; whether for research, artistic inspiration or general curiosity.
Project Focus:
Eastern Art Online is designed to provide layers of information about the objects and the stories they tell. High quality images and up-to-date information for the objects are a priority and there is an extensive, ongoing programme dedicated to this.
As much as possible the Centre avoids duplication of information that already exists online, choosing instead to link to and reference other resources in related areas, while specialising in the unique areas of our collections.
Project Scope:
The Ashmolean [http://www.ashmolean.org/] reopened its doors in November 2009 following an extensive redevelopment."

Mapping and Unmapping the Pacific: Island Perceptions of an 'Oceanic Continent' Conference, Feb 2011.
Taipei Ricci Institute / L'Institut Ricci de Taipei (TRI), Taipei, Taiwan.
Supplied note:
"I would like to bring to your attention an upcoming conference in Taiwan.
The conference is entitled "Mapping and Unmapping the Pacific: Island Perceptions of an 'Oceanic Continent'", and will be held in Taipei in mid February 2011. This is the conference webpage [at the URL below]
The two-day cultural event is organised by the newly-established Taiwan Society for Pacific Studies, which counts five institutional members: Taiwan National University, Academia Sinica, National Central Library, Council for Aboriginal Affairs, and Taipei Ricci Institute.
We are now calling for papers.
Thanking you in advance for your kind interest in the matter, I remain,
Respectfully yours,
Fabrizio Bozzato."
Self-description:
"International Conference [15-16 February, 2011 - ed.],
MAPPING AND UNMAPPING THE PACIFIC:
ISLAND PERCEPTIONS OF AN "OCEANIC CONTINENT"
TAIWAN SOCIETY FOR PACIFIC STUDIES.
This conference -- the first one organized by the Taiwan Society for Pacific Studies -- aims at identifying the ways of mapping the Pacific in time and space that have been developed by islanders, especially by Austronesian populations. Such "mapping" has taken place through migration roads, tales, songs and genealogies, as well as by astronomic or geographic charts and artistic renderings. Taking these representations both in their irreducible variety and as an organic whole may help a new generation of scholars to challenges the usual ways of looking at the Pacific world, thus enabling the inhabitants of this "oceanic continent" to enrich and develop the interactive process through which they understand their history and destiny [...]
The conference agenda will be divided into four sub-topics:
* Routes and Migrations:
Mapping of the Pacific in terms of itineraries, migrations and spatial dynamics.
* Methods of Mapping:
Mapping through tales, genealogies, drawings and pictograms, history of modern mapping, mapping perspectives according to locations.
* Sacred Space-Times:
Sacred elements in traveling and mapping, missionary routes and their rationale, conversions, new religions and the blurring of traditional religious mappings.
* Alliances and Conflicts:
Maritime Law and the drawing of boundaries, boundaries and conflicts around natural resources, fishing rights, garbage disposal; representations of the Pacific space and diplomatic strategies. [...]
Conference date:
15-16 February, 2011.
Foreign scholars will be invited to arrive the day before and to participate in a tour of Taiwan East coast afterwards. [...]

Tenth International Women in Asia (WIA 2010) Conference, Sep 2010.
ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.
Self-description:
"Tenth International Women in Asia Conference:
Crisis, Agency, and Change,
29 September -- 1 October 2010,
ANU College of Asia and the Pacific,
The Australian National University, Canberra.
The College of Asia and the Pacific (CAP) at The Australia National University (ANU) is hosting the Tenth International Women in Asia (WIA) Conference, to be held from 29 September to 1 October 2010 at the ANU, Canberra.
The WIA conferences have been held regularly since 1981 and are supported by the Women's Forum of the Asian Studies Association of Australia. These are international conferences, with attendees from throughout Australia and the Asian regions, including those who are working on or in the region.
Participants include academics and students; representatives of NGOs and other organisations involved in aid and development; artists and performers; and interested members of the general public. The conference provides excellent opportunities for networking and getting to know others in the field.
The theme for the 2010 conference -- the tenth anniversary WIA conference -- is Crisis, Agency, and Change. We hope that this will stimulate discussion across disciplines and across regions on the impact of crises, whether personal or collective, on women; on the representation of women and crisis; and on women's agency, actions, and activism in response to crisis and in efforts to achieve change.
Call for Papers: Contributions are invited from a broad range of participants from various disciplines. Participants are encouraged to submit proposals for panels (with 3-4 papers per panel). Individual proposals for papers are also welcome, as are innovative suggestions for films, exhibitions and other presentations.
[...]
Conference Enquiries: Immediate enquiries can be addressed to wia--at--anu.edu.au."

Afghanistan Digital Library
New York University Libraries, New York, NY, USA.
Self-description:
"The immediate objective of the Afghanistan Digital Library is to retrieve and restore the first sixty years of Afghanistan's published cultural heritage. The project is collecting, cataloging, digitizing, and making available over the Internet as many Afghan publications from the period 1871--1930 as it is possible to identify and locate. In addition to books, this will eventually include all published serials, documents, pamphlets, and manuals. Phase 1 of the project, undertaken in 2005, has drawn materials from the collections of several private collectors as well as from the holdings of New York University Library and the British Library. Phase 2, undertaken in 2006, has trained a staff at the National Archives in Kabul in conservation and digitization and is engaged in the cataloging and digitization of materials held in various public and private collections inside Afghanistan."

The Avestan Digital Archive (ADA)
Dpto. de Filologia Clasica e Indoeuropeo, University of Salamanca, Spain.
Self-description:
"The Avestan Digital Archive (ADA) seeks to be a digital archive containing all Avestan manuscripts spread all over the world. The Avesta, the holy book of the Zoroastrian religion, was last edited at the end of the 90s of the 19th century by the German scholar K. F. Geldner. We claim that presently a new edition is needed. [...]
But a new edition of the Avesta is a huge task: probably more than two hundred manuscripts scattered all over the world have to be checked. [...]
In order to solve this problem we have conceived the ADA project. This project seeks, on the one side, to find, to collect and to digitalize all the extant Avestan manuscripts. On the other hand, the ADA Project is developing a tool to provide all these manuscripts with indexes of the passages and to make them thus available on the web for researchers and for the general public. The electronic tool will allow an easy checking of all the manuscripts containing a concrete passage. This research tool can be useful not only for the Old Iranian studies, but also for the textual criticism based on manuscripts in other languages and fields of research."
