A to Z Photo Dictionary of Japanese Sculpture & Art
www.onmarkproductions.com, Kamakura, Japan.
Self-description:
"This photo library and dictionary [est. 1995] is a labor of love. After moving to Kamakura in 1993, I [= Mark Schumacher] became intrigued by the many deities and faces of Japanese Buddhism and Shintoism. There are dozens of temples and shrines near my home, many dating from the 8th to 13th centuries, many open to the public. There are 400+ deities in this dictionary, and 4,000+ photos of statuary from Kamakura, Nara, Kyoto, and elsewhere in Japan. Any mistakes or omissions are my responsibility."

Russia's Peacetime Demographic Crisis: Dimensions, Causes, Implications
The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR), Seattle, WA, US
Self-description:
"NBR Project Report, May 2010, Russia's Peacetime Demographic Crisis: Dimensions, Causes, Implications - Nicholas Eberstadt.
Modern Russia is in the throes of a prolonged depopulation that [...is] "nothing short of a humanitarian catastrophe."
Eberstadt paints a grim picture for the future of Russia's collective human resources. He shows that despite the government's predictions, Russia's population will continue to decline in the years ahead. [...]
The demographic malaise has significant consequences, most notable of which is the dreadful downturn for quality of life in Russia. The crisis also bodes poorly for Russia's economic, military, and diplomatic goals, which are on a collision course with the country's impending demographic realities.
This report represents the culmination of a three-year research project on Russia's political economy, as examined through the unique prism of that country's demographic profile. The report starts by examining the "arithmetic of Russian depopulation" through the country's trends in births, deaths, and migration, revealing the drivers behind the massive and unprecedented depopulation. The report then looks beyond the numbers, examining less-explored aspects of Russia's population profile such as population aging, education and labor productivity, and social capital, which are key to a society's prosperity.
This report sheds new light on the challenges presented by Russia's depopulation, with critical implications for U.S. policy and international politics."

Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (CCSMSC)
Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, B.C. Canada.
Self-description:
"The Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures has been established at Simon Fraser University to encourage the academic discussion and public understanding of the cultures and societies of Muslim peoples in the past and present. It builds on the History Department's nationally recognized Middle Eastern and Islamic Concentration and on existing activities such as the Drs Fereidoun and Katharine Mirhady Lecture in Iranian Studies, courses in Persian and Arabic, and a growing Farsi library collection. Muslim societies and cultures increasingly have become the focus of public and academic attention, although much of the discussion has centred narrowly on contemporary issues of Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism. The variability and flexibility of Muslim practices and perspectives have not featured in this discourse, leaving the public largely unaware of complexities, achievements and challenges. The Centre will work to redress this imbalance by broadening the discussion to introduce more comparison and complexity in the study of Muslim societies and cultures from Africa, through the Arab and Persianate world, and into Asia and the West. By focussing attention on Muslim (not Islamic) societies and cultures, the Centre encourages the shift in analysis from the notion of a single unitary religious ideascape defined by Islam to a more complex view of Muslims as agents in the construction of their own history."
