Asian Studies WWW Monitor is now 16 Years Old
Internet Publications Bureau, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia
A note from the Editor:
"'The Asian Studies WWW Monitor' (ISSN 1329-9778 http://coombs.anu.edu.au/asia-www-monitor.html) was established 21 April 1994. Today the pioneering electronic journal has turned Sixteen.
The initial postings of the Monitor were made first on 21 April 1994, and then, for the second time, on the 5th June 1994. Yes. The past is a foreign country and so the things and developments, even electronic ones, happen there at an undemanding, leisurely pace. Sixteen years ago scholarly useful information would appear somewhere online with a truly glacial rapidity; say, a useful, shyly published and scantily announced Asian-Studies' item would appear on the Net every now and then, sometime even (oh horribile dictu!, oh the head-spinning, vertiginous e-recklesness!) as often - wait, wait - as often as twice or thrice a month.
As the memento of those heady ancient days the first two of many thousands of subsequent Monitor's entries are quoted below. Please, Dear Readers, do not laugh. You need to bear in mind that my Monitor's past is not just a sluggish, foreign country. It is more (or less) - depending on your training, orientation and leanings - than a slow and strange place. Above all, it is an unbelievably naive, hesitant, or even a very feeble-minded realm. For instance:
- "21 April 1994
The Coombs Computing Unit of the Research Schools of Social Sciences & Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University, Canberra maintains an on-line WAIS database of abstracts of theses and dissertations written at the ANU.
Alumni of the ANU worldwide - the past, present and the future ones - from all fields of study, including both Sciences and the Arts, are warmly invited and encouraged to contribute to the continuing growth of the ANU-Theses-Abstracts database which right now can be interactively accessed and interrogated from this line [1].
If you are an ANU graduate, you are warmly invited to send us your thesis abstract via the electronic form shown here. If you don't have a browser (eg. Mosaic v. 2) which supports forms, you can still e-mail your thesis details (following the preferred ANU format) to: abstracts@coombs.anu.edu.au" [Dear spammers - all of you, everywhere, all the time - I implore you, do me a favour and copy 'abstracts@coombs.anu.edu.au' address to your database's innards. I badly want to see your mailouts being inconvenienced and disrupted when you try to spam the said address. - ed.]
[Footnote 1 of Apr 2010] In 1994 the url was gopher://cheops.anu.edu.au/7waissrc%3a/Coombs-db/ANU-Theses-Abstracts.src Needless to say, for a quite a long while now there are no gopher servers running at the anu.edu.au address. - ed.
- "5 June 1994
The Batish Institute of Indian Music and Fine Arts [2] is happy to announce its new WWW server. The Institute was formed in 1973 by the Batish family and is situated in Santa Cruz, California. It holds classes in vocal and instrumental music. It also publishes RagaNet (TM) , an electronic journal of Indian music and arts. After many years of research, Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish and his son Ashwin Batish have created encyclopedic works designed to teach, from beginning to advanced, the theory and practice of Indian music. Plans are presently underway to archive photographs, digital sound files, general midi sound files, and video clips of a variety of music related material."
[Footnote 2 of Apr 2010] In 1994 the address was http://hypatia.ucsc.edu:70/1/RELATED/Batish ; Nowdays it is http://www.batish.com/ - ed.
Happy Birthday Dear "Monitor"!
Happy Birthday to all of the Monitor's Readers!
Happy Birthday to Thee, for without Thee, Dear Friends and Antagonists, there would not be any Monitor in existence at all.
It is your very attention - whether positive or negative - that nurtures this electronic journal, and keeps its juices running properly.
With 16 rounds of thanks, handclapping, hurrays, bows, occidental genuflections and oriental kowtows,
T. Matthew Ciolek

[Digitised Colonial] Bengali Periodicals and Newspapers
The Virtual Library South Asia (SAVIFA), South Asia Institute/Library, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.
Self-description:
"Starting in 1993, the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta (CSSSC) [http://www.cssscal.org/ - ed.] has undertaken the task of microfilming and digitising a huge amount of textual sources, including all the major journals of colonial Bengal. This unique collection also extends to rare Bengali books, Assamese journals and books, as well as visual art and popular culture (such as specimens of historical Bengali advertising).
In the course of a Memorandum of Understanding between the CSSSC and the South Asia Institute at Heidelberg University [http://www.sai.uni-heidelberg.de/en/index.php], the textual part of this collection is from now on going to be made available on Savifa, the virtual library South Asia [http://archiv.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/savifadok/index.php?la=en - ed.]."

Islam & Tibet: Cultural Interactions (8th-17th centuries)
The Warburg Institute, University of London, London, UK.
Self-description:
"Our aims, [...] are:
* To provide a historical description of the cultural interactions between Tibet and the Islamic world, as they are evident in the history of sciences of these two cultures.
* To explore examples in Tibetan and Arabic literature of how religious ideas of these two cultures interacted.
* To establish an active inter-disciplinary international network of scholars working on various connections between Buddhism and Islam.
In the sphere of medicine, Tibetan historiography has tended to emphasize the links with Indian medicine, which has led to a similar bias in the western historiography of Tibetan medicine. There are, however, a number of indications that point to significant, but as yet unstudied links with Graeco-Arabic medicine.
We would also focus on the mutual influence between Buddhism and Islam as is suggested by the significant presence of different Sufi orders in Central and South Asia. Some of the most influential Sufi orders such as the Naqshbandiyyah and the Chishtiyyah developed techniques regulating the breath which are peculiar to Eastern Sufism and might give evidence of the influence of Yogis [...]
The project is funded by the AHRC and based at the Warburg Institute, where the library already has rich resources in the history of religions and the sciences, and in cultural exchange, and where our exploration of the transmission of Graeco-Arabic learning to Tibet will add another dimension to the study of the Classical Tradition, to which the Institute is devoted."

Suppied-note:
"The following is a short abstract of
our collection on China:
FREDERICK TOWNSEND WARD CHINA COLLECTION
The Frederick Townsend Ward Collection is one of the world's outstanding
collections of Western-language materials on the history of Imperial
China. Approximately 10,000 books, pamphlets, broadsides, and
periodicals, and many rare maps, prints, and photographs document the
history and culture of China and the interactions of China with the West
up to the early 20th century establishment of the Chinese Republic. The
publications document diplomatic and commercial relations between China
and the Westerns nations, and missionary activities in China from the
16th to the 20th centuries. Included in the Ward Collection are some of
the most comprehensive holdings in the world of Chinese coastal
newspapers in English. In addition to the original works acquired early
in the 20th century at the bequest of Elizabeth C. Ward in honor of her
brother, the library continually adds to the collection, being
especially diligent in acquiring graphic representations, newspapers,
and periodicals.
