[On] the digitization of Guenther-Dietz Sontheimer's [India 1950-1992] slide collection
The Virtual Library South Asia (SAVIFA), University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.
Self-description:
"Folk gods, memorial stones, pastoral communities and temples -- the digitization of Guenther-Dietz Sontheimer's slide collection - In 1977 Guenther-Dietz Sontheimer (1934-1992) became a professor of the Religious History of South Asia with a special emphasis on Hinduism at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg, where he also taught traditional law, Marathi language and literature. [...] When Sontheimer died, the library of the South Asia Institute obtained this collection alongside with his tape recordings, films and manuscripts. Now, after more than 15 years and funded by the Cluster of Excellence "Asia and Europe in a Global Context -- Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows", the whole collection has been digitized and is now accessible through the image database HeidICON. [See the Database of G.D. Sontheimer's images from India 1950-1992 http://heidicon.ub.uni-heidelberg.de/ - ed.]
Sontheimer's major concern was to make evident the continuity, interrelation and mutual impact of classical high and folk culture. He used art, art history, archaeology, modern languages and dialects, written records as well as oral traditions to understand the culture and religious life of the "common people", especially the pastoral communities of the Deccan plateau. JAANUS - Terminology of Japanese Architecture and Art History
Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation (AISF), Tokyo, Japan.
Self-description:
"JAANUS [Japanese Architecture and Art Net Users System - ed.] is the on-line Dictionary of Japanese Architectural and Art Historical Terminology compiled by [late - ed.] Dr. Mary Neighbour Parent [The author of 'The Roof in Japanese Buddhist Architecture', Kajima/Weatherhill, 1983. Her biographical details are published at http://www.aisf.or.jp/%7Ejaanus/parent.html - ed.]. [...]

This dictionary contains approximately 8000 terms related to traditional Japanese architecture and gardens, painting, sculpture and art-historical iconography from approximately the 1st century A.D. to the end of the Edo period (1868). Terms from related fields such as lacquer, ceramics, textiles and metalwork have been included where they are considered to be of general interest and/or impact on the principal fields of architecture, painting and sculpture. These definitions are not translations from any one Japanese monolingual dictionary, but have been collated from a range of specialist sources and scholarly publications, and from direct observation and study. Many have never before been defined in English.
The entries are arranged in alphabetical order, the romanized term is followed by Japanese characters and a definition in English. [...] Different meanings or usages of the same term are listed numerically; 1, 2, 3 etc., but terms whose meaning differs in art history and architecture are treated as separate dictionary entries."

Database of G.D. Sontheimer's images from India 1950-1992
HeidICON image database, University of Heidelberg, Heidelberg, Germany.
Supplied note:
"Guenther-Dietz Sontheimer (1934-1992), professor of Religious History of South Asia with a special emphasis on Hinduism at the South Asia Institute, University of Heidelberg, made more than 22.000 slides in his thirty years of research. They portray everyday life and rituals of the common people, the peasants, the pastoral communities and ethnic minorities in India and in particular in Maharshtra.
This quite extraordinary collection of pictures - the oldest were taken in the late 1950s, the latest shortly before his death in 1992- has been digitized and is now accessible through the image [online] database HeidICON. This project was funded by the Cluster of Excellence 'Asia and Europe in a Global Context - Shifting Asymmetries in Cultural Flows'. - ssw"
