The Z. Shahidi International Cultural Foundation (ZSHICF), Tajikistan
Z. Shahidi Museum of Musical Cultures, Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Self-description:
"The Ziyodullo Shahidi International Foundation for Culture (ZSHIFC) was organized in February 1992 by the Z. Shahidi Museum of Musical Culture, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Education, the Academy of Science, the National University, and the Kayra-Kum Carpet Factory. At that time, Tajik society had split into two contradictory ideological fronts which threatened to annihilate the values created by the previous generation, and there was a distinct need for a foundation of this kind.
The Foundation aimed to overcome the conflicts in the country's cultural life which had been hidden during Soviet times, but which came to light in the post-Soviet period, causing a re-evaluation of societal values. A timely conference worked out a program of the rehabilitation and development of pre-existing intellectual interaction and cooperation, with the aim of using that as an ideological instrument in the transition period. A process of consolidation of the creative part of society was begun, and the Foundation's work forms part of that process. Its transformation into sustainable development will be a task for society as a whole."

Before that, those who are now the trustees of SPARROW had met several times and discussed the possibilities of setting up a Women's Archives with a difference. Chinese Names of Western Scholars: a directory
Ostasiatisches Institut - Sinologie, University of Leipzig, Leipzig, Germany.
Self-description:
"This listing aims to facilitate communication between Western and Asian China-scholars. As anyone who has attended a bi- or multilingual conference can attest, some amount of confusion is occasioned by the fact that Western sinologists are usually known in Chinese-speaking academia primarily by their Chinese names. As the latter, however, are not in common use in Western academic circles, it often takes a while to figure out that, for example, the professor Du Zanqi, whom a Chinese conference participant keeps citing, is in fact better known in the English-speaking world as Prasenjit Duara.
With a view towards tackling this particular barrier to scholarly communication, I have compiled a preliminary list of several hundred Chinese names of Western scholars. "Western" here does not refer to any sort of ethnic identity, but merely indicates that the person in question publishes (or published) on some aspect of Chinese culture in a Western language. Thus, the list also includes, for example, Chinese, Taiwanese, Singaporean, Malaysian, Japanese, and Korean scholars whose names typically only appear in transcription in their publications.
No particular search criteria were applied in compiling this list so that the result is a somewhat heterogeneous mix of scholars from all over the world, most of them alive, some already deceased. It is hoped that the publication of the list will result in submission of additional entries by scholars the world over. I expect to expand and update the listings on a regular basis. Of course, other comments as well as corrections are always welcome and should be directed by email to clart [at] uni-leipzig.de."
Site contents:
[As of 6 Jan 2010, an alphabetic list of 603 "Western" names of scholars and the corresponding Chinese "nicknames/pen-names." At this stage there is no separate ordered listing of Chinese signifiers and their "Western" correspondences. Also, the document uses a surprisingly rudimentary data format: # Surname, # Name, # Ideograph. Finally, there is no list, whether detailed or general, of consulted sources. Therefore, any possible typos or factual errors cannot be readily confronted and rectified. Definitely, the present directory is an early draft of a more thorough future work. - ed.]

Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts (DLLM)
National Library of Laos, Vientiane, Lao PDR.
Self-description:
"The Digital Library of Lao Manuscripts makes images of almost 12,000 texts from throughout Laos easily accessible for study. Collaborating institutions are the National Library of Laos, the University of Passau, and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preussischer Kulturbesitz. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
There is a wide diversity in the manuscript collection, covering a large geographical area and historical timeframe, different literary traditions and schools of scribes, and different languages and scripts. The majority of the texts are from the Lao, Lan Na and Tai Lue traditions, with smaller numbers in Tai Nuea, and Tai Dam, etc. The DLLM database can be searched by title, ancillary term, language, script, category, material, location, date, and code number. Grey-tone images of the manuscripts (digitised from microfilm) can be viewed online or copied to your desktop, and complete sets of images of inventoried texts can be downloaded. The DLLM website also provides information about the Lao literary tradition, the Preservation of Lao Manuscripts Programme, study resources, and a gallery of photographs showing the manuscript preservation work of the National Library of Laos.
[...] The DLLM website was launched in September 2009. At present 6,173 texts are searchable. More texts will be added regularly until the full collection of almost 12,000 texts becomes available in late 2010. Feedback on the functionality of the site and suggestions for improvement are welcome."
