The Silk Road e-journal
The Silkroad Foundation, Saratoga, CA, US.
Self-description:
"Our journal [published by the Silkroad Foundation www.silkroadfoundation.org, Journal editor: Daniel C. Waug, University of Washington (Seattle)] is dedicated to public education about the history and cultures of Eurasia, especially in pre-modern times. While we invoke the historic "Silk Road" in our title, our view of the Silk Roads is an expansive one, encompassing pre-history, the era beginning with the establishment of trans-Eurasian trade and cultural interaction some two millennia ago, and the subsequent history of those interactions down through the centuries. Modern evocations of cultural traditions are of interest, especially in the areas which historically have been the domain of pastoral nomads. We publish articles by well known scholars and those who have other expertise on the regions and material of interest. Where possible we are communicating the results of the latest research, including new archaeological investigations. The journal also serves as the means to alert readers about upcoming programs connected with Silk Road topics."

Self-description:
"The Arts of China Consortium (ACC) [formerly Chinese and Japanese Art History WWW Virtual Library] was founded in 2002 to promote the study and understanding of Chinese art history, archaeology, and visual and material culture, and to support the research and professional activities of its members. To encourage more informal dialogue among members, ACC conducts an e-mail listserv and maintains this website to provide information on graduate programs in Asian art, lectures/symposia/conferences, grants/fellowships, positions available, and web links to facilitate research and pedagogy. In keeping with the broad range of members' research and pedagogical practice, posted entries relate to the visual and material culture within the historical boundaries of China and Japan. [...] ACC is currently working towards gaining affiliation with the College Art Association and the Association for Asian Studies, where ACC hopes to organize annual thematic panel sessions. Kern Collection about Indonesia [in The National Library of Australia]
The National Library of Australia (NLA), Canberra, Australia
Supplied note: "The printed and online December 2009 issue of The National Library Magazine contains an article by Andrew Gosling, "Indonesia before independence through the Kern Collection" [at the URL below] In 1959 the National Library of Australia acquired the Kern Collection, its most important collection of pre-20th century books and manuscripts about the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia). The Library integrated the material into its Rare Books, Manuscripts and General Collections. Rudolf Aernoud Kern (1875-1958) was a distinguished civil servant in the Dutch East Indies from 1896 to 1926, and later an academic at Leiden University in the Netherlands. Throughout his life he wrote prolifically on Indonesian topics. Kern also collected widely on the bibliography, history, language, law, religion, ethnography, archaeology, and fine arts of Indonesia. Highlights of his collection include rare 17th century books and pamphlets about the history of eastern Indonesia as well as rare dictionaries and grammars of Southeast Asian languages. Kern's greatest scholarly interest lay in the language and culture of the Sundanese people of West Java. In his collection there is a set of 130 transcripts of Sundanese manuscripts, which are seen to represent Sundanese traditional literary culture. Several of the originals have been lost and their transcriptions in Canberra may be the only extant copies available. - ag."

Deadly Vanguards: A [2009] Study of al-Qa'ida's Violence Against Muslims
The Combating Terrorism Center (CTC), U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY, US.
Self-description:
"Combating Terrorism Center at West Point Occasional Paper Series.
Deadly Vanguards: A Study of al-Qa'ida's Violence Against Muslims. December 2009.
Scott Helfstein, Ph.D. Nassir Abdullah Muhammad al-Obaidi

[...] Since the inception of al-Qa'ida, the organization has claimed to represent Muslim interests around the world declaring itself the vanguard of true Islam, and the defender of Muslim people. Unfortunately for al-Qa'ida, their actions speak louder than their words. The fact is that the vast majority of al-Qa'ida's victims are Muslims: the analysis here shows that only 15% of the fatalities resulting from al-Qa'ida attacks between 2004 and 2008 were Westerners.

This report [850KB, PDF format - ed.] used Arabic media sources to study the victim's of al-Qa'ida's violence through a non-Western prism. This allows researchers to avoid accusations of bias associated with Western news outlets or U.S.-based datasets. [...] All of the sources used in this exercise are available as an appendix to this report to ensure that other researchers can reproduce these results.

The results show that non-Westerners are much more likely to be killed in an al-Qa'ida attack. From 2004 to 2008, only 15% percent of the 3,010 victims were Western. During the most recent period studied the numbers skew even further. From 2006 to 2008, only 2% (12 of 661 victims) are from the West, and the remaining 98% are inhabitants of countries with Muslim majorities. During this period, a person of non-Western origin was 54 times more likely to die in an al-Qa'ida attack than an individual from the West. [...] Irrespective of statements made by [al-Qa'ida's second in command Ayman] Zawahiri and others, the figures, drawn from exclusively Arabic news sources, show that the Muslims they claim to protect are much more likely to be the targets of al-Qa'ida violence than the Western powers they claim to fight."

"The Association [est. Aug 2002 - ed.] is meant to be an academic and professional organization for those who are engaged in teaching and research in the field of Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka are carried out, mostly, in an isolated manner, by individual scholars or by small groups of scholars associated with the departments of Buddhist studies of the Sri Lanka university system. Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre (NSC)
Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS), Singapore
Self-description:
"The Nalanda-Sriwijaya Centre [NSC] at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies [http://www.iseas.edu.sg], Singapore, pursues research on historical interactions among Asian societies and civilisations. It serves as a forum for comprehensive study of the ways in which Asian polities and societies have interacted over time through religious, cultural, and economic exchanges and diasporic networks. The Centre also offers innovative strategies for examining the manifestations of hybridity, convergence and mutual learning in a globalising Asia. It sees the following as it main aims:
1. To develop the 'Nalanda idea' of building for contemporary Asia an appreciation of Asian achievements and mutual learning, as exemplified by the cosmopolitan Buddhist centre of learning in Nalanda, as well as the 'Sriwijaya idea' of Southeast Asia as a place of mediation and linkages among the great civilisations.
2. To encourage and develop skills needed to understand the civilisations of Asia and their interrelationships.
3. To build regional research capacities and infrastructure for the study of the historical interactions among the civilisations and societies of Asia."

"'Online Ranking of the Asian Studies Organizations: a quarterly scorecard (ORASO).' This document [est. Oct 2008 and edited by T. Matthew Ciolek, as a part of the 'Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library' (coombs.anu.edu.au/WWWVL-AsianStudies.html)] is updated four times a year (March, June, September and December). It systematically monitors and collects information about the relative online rank (i.e. the so called 'PageRank' [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank]) of the top 30 Asian Studies' institutions, organizations, specialist information resources, and research networks indexed by the Google Search Engine [www.google.com].
The PageRank of a given web address measures the site's relative importance within the world-wide archipelago of other web sites dealing with a given topic. The lower the PageRank, the greater is the deemed importance or relevance of the indexed site."
