Documents on Religion and Society in North Karnataka, South India, 1837-1852
Yale University Library, Yale University, New Haven, CT, US
Supplied note: "The Basel Evangelical Mission, which operated in India in the Kannada and Malayalam languages, invested a lot of effort in communications in the 19th century. It was, for instance, among the first missionary societies to use photography (in India from the late 1850s--see the web site with historical photographs in the Basel Mission archive - www.bmpix.org). Its large body of written reports produced in India for its headquarters in Basel (about 30,000 of them, 1834-1913) are, however, opaque for many people, since they are in German. In an effort to overcome this problem, even if only on a small scale, two sets of English translations are now available from the Basel Mission's early reports from Karnataka, made by Jennifer and Paul Jenkins:
(a) 'Journeys and Encounters. Religion, Society and the Basel Mission in North Karnataka 1837-1852' 250 pp. These texts were selected to offer a broad view of the kind of materials available in these reports, but pay especial attention to missionary contacts with organised Hinduism, especially organised Lingayatism.
(b) 'A missionary journey from Mangalore to Subramanya in 1840--one journey from two points of view', a 45-pp. translation of parallel reports written by Herrmann Moegling and Gottfried Weigle on a journey which also included a visit to Dharmastalla.
"Journeys and Encounters" is available online - [at the URL below] "A Missionary Journey..." can be obtained online from (paul.jenkins--at--gmx.ch). Both sets of translations can also be obtained as CDRom from Paul Jenkins. In India they are available from the Archive, Karnataka Theological College, Balmatta, 575 001 Mangalore. - pj."

My Shanghai Diary - parts I, II, III, & IV [by B. Raman]
Chennai Centre For China Studies (C3S), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Self-description: "B. Raman, C3S Paper[s No. 153, 154, 155, and 157] dated May 10, 2008. (Based on the writer's visit to Shanghai from May 6 to 9, 2008, for a discussion on the 'Beijing Olympics & Security')."
An extract from 'My Shanghai Diary - I: A Miracle Within a Miracle': "[...] 3. Statistics are irrelevant with regard to Shanghai. The statistics of today will become outdated next week and so on. That is the pace of its development. Shanghai is proud that every important country of the world is represented there - in its industries, in its business world, in its financial centres, in its architecture and in its arts and culture. 4. Shanghai is a miracle within a miracle. If China is rapidly overtaking the rest of Asia - even the rest of the world - in its economic development and modernisation, Shanghai has already overtaken the rest of China many times over in every aspect. [...]"
An extract from 'My Shanghai Diary--IV: Suspicions & Ground Reality': "[...] 7. India is not among the ill-wishers of China. It applauds the Chinese economic miracle. It applauds even more the great achievements of Shanghai. India wants the Olympics to succeed and will co-operate in every possible way with the Chinese authorities in preventing any terrorist threat. If the Olympic Games turn out to be less spectacular than China had wanted them to be and if the unrest and the global movement against China continues, the Chinese will have to blame themselves for it [...]"

Chinese Civilization in Time and Space (CCTS) [WebGIS]
Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan
Self-description: "[...] In response of the demands of interdisciplinary research applications, this system aims to construct an integrated GIS-based application infrastructure within the spatial extent of China, in the timeframe of Chinese history, and with the contents of Chinese civilization. Although target users are primarily scholars, academic experts, and school teachers, it is also our goal to provide general spatial- and temporal-based applications This, we hope, will establish a feedback mechanism of continuously collecting research and application results to fertilize the contents of this system and elaborate the value of information integration This system consists of three major components: basic geospatial materials, WebGIS integrated application environment, and thematic information. The fundamental base maps are based on Dr. Tan's "The Historical Atlas of China". "The Historical Atlas of China" provides users with Chinese historical features, covering Chinese history over the past 2000 years, from the ancient time to Qing dynasty. Furthermore, various historical atlas and remote sensing imagery are persistently geo-referenced and overlaid into the system to broaden the spatial and temporal scope."

[Electronic] Historical Atlas of South India
Institut Francais de Pondicherry / French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP), Pondicherry, India
Self-description: "[...] The first phase [of the project - ed.] was completed early in 2005 and the outcome was a prototype for the Pudukkottai (Central Tamil Nadu) region, which works both from a CD-Rom and on the Internet. This work provided the team an opportunity to explore multidisciplinary approaches in research using IT&C, with History and Archaeology on one hand and GIS and Informatics on the other hand. The prototype CD-Rom has already been used to present the project at various seminars and workshops, and has also been sent to scholars who would be interested in working with us in the future phases. In the current phase of the project (starting from 2005 May onwards), we intend to extend the scope to the entire states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, as well as two pilot areas in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka [...]. The idea behind initiating the two new pilot areas is to prepare for the extension of the project area further north so that the entire South India could be covered during the subsequent phase. The primary source of data for Tamil Nadu will be contributed by the Department of Epigraphy and Archaeology, Tamil University, Thanjavur. [...]
[Web version of the prototype on Historical Atlas of South India] "The bulk of the basic materials comes from the epigraphic records (nearly 9,000) for the period from AD 600 to 1600. Archaeology provides resources for the pre-600 period. Literature is useful as a supplementary source. Besides these original sources, there are a few secondary works, particularly on art, which provide data for the maps. The photo collection of IFP provides also material for illustrations. Clicking next, you will now have an overview of the Atlas, but with information on Pudukottai area only."
