Organization for the Advancement of Studies of Inner Eurasian Societies (OASIES)
www.oasies.org, New York, NY, US
Self-description: "The Organization for the Advancement of Studies of Inner Eurasian Societies (OASIES) is a community of Columbia University graduate students from varied disciplines and area studies perspectives. Our goal is to foster dialogue and partnership across the academic spaces bounded by the East Asian, Middle Eastern, South Asian, and Russian area studies paradigms as we investigate Inner Eurasia. Since the disbandment of the Center for the Study of Central Asia (CSCA) at Columbia University in 1996, there has been little institutional support for students interested in studying the vast Inner Eurasian space between East Asia, Russia, the Middle East, and South Asia. Up until the disappearance of CSCA, Columbia was widely regarded as a university dedicated to the study of Inner Eurasia. We would like to help restore Columbia to preeminence in this field by drawing on support from the four major area studies institutions whose scholarship contain and inform, but are not fundamental to, the study of Inner Eurasia. Clearly, such an endeavor would require taking stock of what has come before and assessing the lacunae that may have developed as a result of the area-studies paradigm."

China Biographical Database Project (CBDB)
Harvard-Yenching Institute, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, US
Self-description: "The China Biographical Database is an online relational database with biographical information about approximately 35,000 individuals as of April 2007 [over 40,000 individuals in Apr 2008 - ed.], primarily from the seventh through fourteenth centuries. The data is meant to be useful for statistical and spatial [i.e. GIS - ed.] analysis as well as serving as a kind of biographical reference. The long term goal of CBDB is systematically to include all significant biographical material from China's history and to make the contents available free of charge, without restriction, for academic use. CBDB is currently adding more Song period biographies. CBDB originates with the work of Robert M. Hartwell (1932-1996). Professor Hartwell bequeathed his estate, including the first version of this database, to the Harvard-Yenching Institute. The development of CBDB is now a joint project of the Harvard-Yenching Institute, the Institute of History and Philology of Academia Sinica, and the Center for Research on Ancient Chinese History at Peking University.
The CBDB Steering Committee is responsible for oversight: Peter K. Bol, Harvard University (chair); Deng Xiaonan, Center for Research on Ancient Chinese History, Peking University; Michael A. Olympic Torch To Everest: Neo Red Guards Prevail
Chennai Centre For China Studies, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Extract: [typos present in the original paper are retained - ed.] "3. It is learnt that in the wake of the continuing unrest in the Tibetan-inhabited areas, the matter [of the Olympic torch - ed.] was considered by the party leadership in Beijing and a suggestion reportedly made by Prime Minister Wen Jiabo that the torch should be taken to Tibet only once between June 19 and 21 [2008 - ed.] and that the proposal for Chinese mountaineers to take it to the top of the Everest should be abandoned. This suggestion was reportedly accepted. [...] 4. However, this position has been changed and Chinese officials have been saying that they are determined to take the torch to the top of the Everest whatever be the consequences [...] 5. The reiteration of the plan to take the torch to the top of the Everest is reported to have been the outcome of a strong opposition from a group of Neo Red Guards consisting of Mr.Meng Jianzhu, the Minister for Public Security, Mr. Zhang Qingli, the head of the Chinese Communist Party in Tibet, and Mr.Qiangha Puncog, the head of the Tibetan Government. It is understood that the policy on Tibet is increasingly dictatred by this group, which enjoys the support of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). This group reportedly argued that any plans to abandon the climb to the Everest with the torch could be seen by the Tibetans as a sign of weakness and could further worsen the situation. Its views prevailed. [...] 8. Annexed is the text of an interview given by Mr. Zhang Qingli to "Spiegel", the well-known German journal on August 16, 2006." - b.raman

Beijing-Vetted Tibetan Monks Turn Against Beijing
Chennai Centre For China Studies, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Extract: "Beijing-Vetted Tibetan Monks Turn Against Beijing, B.Raman, C3SPaper No.142 dated April 7, 2008. After a relative lull of about nine days from March 19 to 27, 2008, there has again been unrest in Tibet and the adjoining Tibetan-inhabited areas of Sichuan, Gansu and Qinghai in the form of public demonstrations by the Tibetans and clashes with the security forces when they tried to disperse them. 2. Since March 27, 2008, the anti-Beijing and pro-Dalai Lama incidents have been more frequent and widespread in Sichuan and Gansu than in Tibet. [...] It is the younger monks ordained under the strict supervision of the Communist Party and the Public Security Bureaux after 1979, who have been in the forefront of the demonstrations and violent incidents. They have been effectively networking with the local members of the TYC [the Tibetan Youth Congress - ed.], which has reportedly set up many sleeper cells. 12. The Chinese authorities have been adamant that they would take the Olympic Torch to Tibet whatever be the consequences. They intend taking the torch twice. On the first occasion in the last week of April and the first week of May, it will be taken to the top of the Everest. It will then be taken to other Chinese provinces. It will be brought back to Tibet between June 19 and 21, 2008, and taken across Lhasa and some other towns. A further escalation of violence can be expected during these two periods." - b.raman

Verre Taal - Database of Chinese Literature in Dutch Translation
Department of Chinese Studies and the Sinological Library at Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands
Supplied note: "Dear colleagues, We are pleased to announce the launch of VerreTaal, an online database of Chinese Literature in Dutch Translation.
VerreTaal is a collaboration between the Department of Chinese Studies and the Sinological Library at Leiden University and the Research Centre for Translation at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Using English as the interface language, VerreTaal aims to provide a research tool for translation studies, (comparative) literary studies, (inter)cultural studies and area studies, Chinese studies and other academic fields -- and for the general reader and library user.
The database lists Dutch-language, direct and relay translations of works originally written in Chinese. At present it includes book titles in poetry, fiction and non-fiction, and drama. Entries in multiple-author anthologies contain individual author names, story / essay titles and corresponding page numbers where available. In the near future, we hope to expand the database to include journal publications.
VerreTaal can be browsed by authors, translators, titles and subjects, or searched using traditional and simplified Chinese and Hanyu Pinyin. It has been tested on various platforms and browsers and is accessible free of charge at [the URL below].
With kind regards, Audrey Heijns, Research Centre for Translation, Chinese University of Hong Kong; Hanno Lecher, Librarian, Sinological Library, Leiden University; Maghiel van Crevel, Professor of Chinese language & literature, Leiden University. - hl"

ANU Asian and Pacific Cultural Studies Network (APCSN)
The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia.
Supplied note: "The ANU Asian and Pacific Cultural Studies Network [to be launched 10 Apr 2008 - ed.] has emerged from conversations amongst scholars in the College of Arts and Social Sciences [CASS - ed.] and the College of Asia and the Pacific [CAP - ed.] who draw on the critical methods of cultural studies to understand the rapidly changing forms of contemporary cultures across the region. These methods - including poststructuralism, postcolonialism, globalisation studies, transnationalist approaches, and queer studies - provide platforms for understanding the diversity of Australian, Asian, and Pacific cultures and histories, and their interconnectivity with each other and the rest of the world. These and many other contemporary issues cross national boundaries, and do not fit neatly within single-country approaches. At the same time, the new critical methods used in this research often cross the boundaries of established disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. The network will provide a cross-college forum for scholars and graduate students interested in critical and transnational approaches to research on Australia, Asia, and the Pacific. Full information about the APCSN, including membership, upcoming events and initiatives, can be found at [the URL below]. Convenors: Jacquie Lo (CASS) and Peter Jackson (CAP). - kh."
