The Islamic Imagery Project: Visual Motifs in Jihadi Internet Propaganda

Self-description: "The Internet is a critical means of communication for the newest generation of terrorist groups. The salafi jihadi movement in particular has used the Internet to pass strategic, operational, and tactical instruction to its followers, becoming adept at utilizing the anonymity and global reach of online communications to promote its message. Visual imagery provides a key aspect of the terrorists' message in that it allows these groups to paint a picture of their objectives, their enemies, and their strategy through graphics, photographs, and symbols. The Combating Terrorism Center at West Point has provided an open source catalogue of these images and their meaning. The Islamic Imagery Project: Visual Motifs in Jihadi Internet Propaganda [2006?] provides analyses for one-hundred key motifs that appear throughout the jihadists' visual propaganda. It is our hope that this project will be useful to scholars and practitioners alike. We welcome comments and feedback.

China and India believe that the principles of common but differentiated responsibility and respective capabilities mean that it must be acknowledged once and for all that developed countries are chiefly responsible for the greenhouse effect, that developing countries will suffer the effects of climate change more than rich ones and that poor countries have the right to develop, especially as there are still 1.5 billion people in the world who do not have the luxury of electricity. Extract: "There were 56 acts of suicide terrorism in Pakistan during 2007, resulting in the death of 419 members of the security forces ---- the majority of them from the police and para-military forces --- and 217 civilians. The most important civilian killed was Mrs. Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister. As against this, there were only six incidents in 2006 in which 46 members of the security forces and 91 civilians were killed. 2. Of the 56 incidents of 2007, there were only four during the first six months of the year. The remaining 52 took place after the Pakistani commando action in the Lal Masjid of Islamabad between July 10 and 13, 2007, in which about 300 tribal girls studying in a madrasa attached to the mosque were allegedly killed. The Gerald Warner Taiwan Image Collection

Supplied note: "The Gerald Warner Taiwan Image Collection [launched in Jan 2008 - ed.] is a photographic record of a US consul's impressions of urban and rural life in Taiwan under Japanese colonial rule. Totaling 340 photographs and postcards [masters were scanned as high resolution TIFs (4000 pixels across the long edge), and then converted to JPEG2000 for online display, and to JPEG for download - ed.] gathered by Warner between August 26, 1937 and March 8, 1941, these images provide a snapshot of Taiwan's hybrid culture of Chinese, Taiwanese, Austronesian, and Japanese influences. The subjects represented are wide-ranging, including clothing, arboriculture, urban structures, agriculture, religious rituals, topography, highways, parks, and more. These digitized images have been researched and annotated to serve as a web-based encyclopedia of colonial Taiwan's material culture. Most of these photographs were taken for commercial purposes under conditions of colonial domination. Artistic license, ethnographic sensibilities and propagandistic intentions are all documented herein, revealing a cross-section of the early twentieth-century Japanese imperial imagination. Through the use of captions, staged "traditional" motifs, and colorization, cropping, and re-touching of photos, idealized portraits of Japan's largest tropical possession were disseminated throughout the empire and abroad. To track the "careers" of these images in print, genealogical records have been created for each entry. By tracking the history of images as they re-appear in subsequent publications, the cumulative process through which photographs become icons of peoples, places, and practices can be charted. McLaren-Human Collection (Korean)

Self-description: "In June 1984 the National Library received an important gift of old and rare Korean titles. These had belonged to Mrs Jessie McLaren, who went to Korea from Melbourne with her doctor husband in 1911. Her interest in Korean culture led her to collect many books, some of which she was able to bring back to Australia during the Second World War. Following her death, her daughter Mrs Rachel Human donated the material to the Library. The McLaren-Human Collection as it is now known, contains 82 titles in 150 volumes dating from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. Most relate to Korean history and literature. One of the most unusual publications, Samgang Haengsilto (The Three Principles of Basic Human Relationships) consists of illustrated Confucian moral tales in Chinese and Korean scripts. A complete listing of the McLaren-Human collection, which also contains some material in Japanese and Chinese, is available on request from the Asian Collections Section. [...]"
