The Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC)
McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Self-description: "[A] research initiative and resource base established [1993/2007 - ed.] to promote the study of the history, economy and cultures of the lands and peoples touching the Indian Ocean World - from Africa to the Middle East, India, Indonesia and Australia to China. A complex regional trading system since the 10th Century, the Indian Ocean World constituted the first 'global' economy. Today the region comprises 50 per cent of the planet's population and is forecast to become the leading world economy by 2020. The IOWC pursues an interdisciplinary approach inspired by French historian Fernand Braudel (1902-1985) who posited history as an ongoing interaction between human and natural forces, encompassing geography, environment, climate and disease. The Centre's current research priorities are: * the rise and development of the first global economy * human migration and diaspora * slavery, the slave trade and slave diaspora * the exchange of commodities, technology and ideas."

Attempt To Kill Benazir Bhutto: An Update
Institute For Topical Studies, Chennai, India
Supplied note: "The latest paper of the Institute For Topical Studies, A-2/3, Bharathi Dasan Colony, K.K.Nagar, Chennai---600078, India, on the above subject is now available at the web site of the South Asia Analysis Group (SAAG), New Delhi, at [the URL below] - br."
Extract: "The Karachi police investigating the unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Mrs. Benazir Bhutto at Karachi on October 18,2007, shortly after she returned from eight years of political exile, seem to have ruled out the use of a car bomb by the unidentified perpetrators. They believe that the attempt was made by a suicide bomber, who had probably at least one accomplice. According to them, between 12 and 15 kilos of the high-grade RDX explosive were used in the explosion. The RDX is generally available only from the security forces and is rather expensive. This, if confirmed, would indicate the presence of accomplices in the security forces." - b.raman

Central and Eastern European Network for Indian Studies (CEENIS)
CEENIS, European Union.
Self-description: "The Central & Eastern European Network of Indian Studies (CEENIS) is a direct outcome of two conferences: the 1st Central & Eastern European Indological Conference on Regional Cooperation organised at Warsaw University in Poland in September 2005, and the 2nd Central & Eastern European Indological Conference: New Perspectives on Education about India, organised at Vilnius University in Lithuania in August 2006. The participants of both conferences were unanimous that there was an overwhelming need to establish a body coordinating the cooperation in the field of Indian studies, as well as the exchange of Indological expertise and finding the ways in which it could be shared in the regular activity of the Central and Eastern European academic institutions. This task is of vital importance especially in view of the imminent challenges facing all universities in the new EU-member countries as the result of the Bologna Process. The CEENIS has been thus set up to work also for the mobility of teaching staff and students in the region, as well as for the optimal compatibility of didactic programmes of its members."
