"The Asian Studies WWW Monitor" (ISSN 1329-9778) was established 21 April 1994. the journal, a pioneering and the only publication of this kind in the world, provides virtually daily abstracts and reviews of new/updated online resources of significance to research, teaching and communications dealing with Asian Studies. It is published by the Internet Publications Bureau, RSPAS, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. the periodical forms a key element of the global, cooperative project Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library. For further details see a page About the Asian Studies WWW Monitor. the journal is complemented by its sister publication Pacific Studies WWW Monitor which was established in April 2000.

Daily contents" summaries and evaluations published in the web edition of the Journal are disseminated also on the network via a mailing list.

Self-description: "The Turkestanskii Al'bom (Turkestan Album) provides a visual survey of Central Asia from the perspective of the Russian imperial government that took control of the area in the 1850s and 1860s. About 1,200 photographs, with some architectural plans, watercolor drawings, and maps [now digitised and published online by the LOC - ed.] are arranged in four parts.
* the "Chast' Arkheologicheskaia" (Archaeological Part) features views of Islamic architecture, chiefly in Samarkand. (2 volumes) [view description and images]
* the "Chast' Etnograficheskaia" (Ethnographical Part) offers individual portraits and daily life scenes of Uzbeks, Tadzhiks, Kazakhs, Kirghiz, and others. (2 volumes) [view description and images]
* the "Chast' Promyslovaia" (Trades Part) shows such occupations as textile production, mining, and baking. (1 volume) [view description and images]
* the "Chast' Istoricheskaia" (Historical Part) focuses on Russian military activities with battle maps and portraits of soldiers involved between 1853 and 1871. (1 volume) [view description and images] [...]

Konstantin Petrovich Von Kaufman (1818-1882), the first governor general of Russian Turkestan, commissioned the albums to acquaint Russians and Westerners with the region. the Russian orientalist A.L. Kun (also spelled Kuhn) compiled the first three parts, and the albums were formerly referred to as the Kun Collection. the other compilers included M.T. Brodovskii, M.A. Terentyev, N.V. Bogaevskii and photographer N.N. Nekhoroshev. the Military-Topographic Department, Military District of Tashkent printed the lithographic parts of each plate. the production work was primarily done in St. Petersburg and Tashkent in 1871-72.

Supplied note: "Hosted by the Center for Asian Democracy (CAD) and the Institute for Democracy and Development (IDD), the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky, the United States, March 13-14, 2008.
We are looking for (1) theory-oriented papers that address the relationship between Islam and democracy, (2) history-oriented works that trace the introduction of Islam to Asia, and (3) area-based papers that deal with the contemporary issues of Islam and democracy in South Asia, Southeast Asia and Central Asia, including Xinjiang in China.
The following are suggested topics: (1) the Compatibility (or incompatibility) of Islam with Democracy; (2) the Historical Diffusion of Islam through Asia (3) Asian Islam and Arab Islam: Similarities and Differences (4) the Taliban and Islam in Afghanistan (5) Islam in Pakistan (6) Islam and Religious Conflicts in India (7) Asia's Radical Islamic Diaspora (8) Islam in Central Asia and Western China (9) Islam and Democratization in Indonesia (10) Islam and Democracy in Malaysia. The organizers are open to other topics relevant to Islam and democracy in Asia.
Prospective participants of the workshop should submit a one-page proposal by November 1, 2007. Acceptance of proposals will be sent to the authors by November 15, 2007.
We will cover the costs of the participants for airfare, room/board, and provide an honorarium. - sh."
