Trading routes to China across the Himalaya and attendant ranges - Kibithoo to Karakorum
bameduniya.tripod.com, Waltham, MA, US
Self-description: "The Himalaya are 2700 kms or so long and about 300 kms wide range between the Big Bend of the Tsangpo in the SE and the Big Bend of the Indus in the NW. [...] Trade routes to China pierced this topographical tangle in countless places. Kibithoo, in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, is the easternmost and lowest direct route into Tibet, China. Karakorum pass in the north of Ladakh is the highest usable route to Sinkiang, China. The greater portion of Tibet's population lives in the 100 to 160 kms broad belt to its south on either side of the Brahmaputra, the Satluj and the Indus. [...] Some of the trade routes from NE to NW to Tibet & Sinkiang are listed below. Of these only 2 are functioning officially but both countries goods continue to flow across the borders from several places."
Site contents: * Arunachal (details of 7 routes); * Sikkim (2 routes); * Uttar Pradesh (4 routes); * Himachal Pradesh (4 routes); * Ladakh (8 routes), * A 1992 list of 29 goods that can be "exported freely" to China as border barter trade through the only two Land Customs Stations (Garbyang in Uttaranchal and Shipki La in Himachal) open so far along the entire Indo-China border.

SuttaCentral: Online Sutta Correspondence Project
Santi Forest Monastery, Bundanoon, NSW, Australia
Self-description: "SuttaCentral aims at facilitating the study of Buddhist texts from comparative and historical perspectives. It focuses on the texts that represent 'Early Buddhism', texts preserved not only in the Pali Sutta and Vinaya Pitakas but also in Chinese and Tibetan translations and in fragmentary remains in Sanskrit and other languages.
SuttaCentral offers a gateway to this material by enabling users to quickly identify the Chinese, Tibetan, and/or Sanskrit parallels of any given Pali discourse - or vice versa. Having found that information, one can then can click on the relevant links and consult the actual texts, most of which are accessible from other web-sites. Later we also hope to provide direct access to available English translations.
The system focuses initially on providing the correspondence data from the perspective of the Pali suttas; that is, given a particular Pali sutta, one can find the parallels in other textual languages. Finding parallels in the reverse direction will become possible in due course. In building SuttaCentral, we plan to work through the nikayas, one by one, in the traditional sequence. At present the Digha and Majjhima Nikayas are complete. Data on the remaining nikayas will become accessible as the relevant research and data-entry work progresses.
The data supplied here offer substantial improvements and additions over the pioneering work by Akanuma (Comparative Catalogue of Chinese Agamas & Pali Nikayas, 1929) [Chizen Akanuma, The Comparative Catalogue of Chinese Agamas and Pali Nikayas. (Nagoya, Japan: Hijinaku-Shobo, 1929; reprint, Delhi: Sri Satguru Publications, 1990) - ed.], until now the standard reference work in this area. Nevertheless, there is still much room for improvement. We therefore invite other scholars working on this same early Buddhist material to provide input to SuttaCentral (see 'Contacts'), so that the material displayed is continually refined for greater accuracy and completeness. [...]
Sutta Central was conceived and designed by the collective imaginations of Venerable Analayo (Germany), Rod Bucknell (Australia), and Bhante Sujato (Australia), based on sutta correspondence tables compiled by Rod Bucknell and Ven. Analayo."

"The New Silk Roads: Transport and Trade in Greater Central Asia" - an e-book
Central Asia Caucasus Institute & Silk Road Studies Program, Uppsala, Sweden
Self-description: "The New Silk Roads: Transport and Trade in Greater Central Asia. [2007]. Edited by S. Frederick Starr.
Free, downloadable PDF files are available below.
[...] Thanks to the collapse of the USSR, whose closed border stood like a wall across the heart of Eurasia, to China's decision to open trade across its western border, and to the gradual return of Afghanistan to the community of nations, continental trade spanning the entire Eurasian land mass is again becoming possible. Western Europe, China, Russia, the Middle East, and the Indian sub-continent can, in time, connect with one another and with the lands between by means of direct roads, railroads, and technologies for transporting gas, oil, and hydroelectric power. These 'new Silk Roads' have enormous potential for the entire Eurasian continent, and especially for the countries of 'Greater Central Asia' which they must traverse. This book, with contributions by eminent scholars from sixteen countries, reviews the state of the links of transport and trade that are bringing about this fundamental change on the world's largest continent. It explores the potential of such interchange for fifteen of the countries most directly affected by it. It identifies some of the many impediments to the full realization of this epochal project. And it suggests a few steps that might be taken to ameliorate or remove these impediments."
