Tawang: some Indian plain-speaking at last

Extract: "18. Shri Antony [India's Defence Minister - ed.] told journalists at New Delhi on June 18, 2007: ' China has been building infrastructure (near the Line of Actual Control). We are also building infrastructure. Nobody can prevent both sides. There is nothing wrong in that. They have the right to build infrastructure on their territory. We have the right to do that on ours. We are also trying to hasten the development of our infrastructure. They have their perception (about Arunachal Pradesh). On our part, we are very categorical that Arunachal Pradesh is part of India.' 19. These are welcome signals to Beijing of our determination to defend Arunachal Pradesh, including Tawang. But signals without strength will serve little purpose. Strength can come only from concrete action on the ground to strengthen our intelligence and military-related capabilities in Arunachal Pradesh." - b.raman

Himalayan Art Resources (HAR)
Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation, New York, NY, US.
Self-description: "An online educational resource with over 25,000 images. The mission of the Himalayan Art Resources website (HAR) is to create a comprehensive education and research database and virtual museum of Himalayan art: First, the website exhibits images of art from museum, university and private collections throughout the world. Second, the website documents all Himalayan art objects that are known through past or present collections or publications. Third, the database identifies and catalogues all images (comprised of painting, sculpture, ritual objects, murals, etc.). When an object image is not available for lack of permission from the copyright holder, the database uses a place card image. Book cover images are used for publications and generic place cards for collections.
Submitting Images - Museums, institutions and private collectors of Himalayan art are invited, and encouraged, to submit images for cataloguing and display. To submit an image for consideration, please send a digitized image, by e-mail or CD, preferrably 1000 dpi in size. Additionally, you must submit a written statement attesting to your ownership of either the object itself or the rights to the image being submitted."

Correlates of Public Support for Terrorism in the Muslim World
US Institute for Peace (USIP), Washington DC, US
Extract: "Correlates of Public Support for Terrorism in the Muslim World, Ethan Bueno de Mesquita, Washington University in St. Louis, May 17, 2007, www.usip.org Working Paper-1 [...] This report examines the correlates of individual-level support for terrorism in fourteen Muslim countries [incl. Bangladesh, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Pakistan, Turkey, and Uzbekistan - ed.]. I identify a variety of factors that are correlated with support for terrorism. These factors can be divided into a several categories: attitudes toward Islam, attitudes toward the United States, attitudes toward politics and economics in the home countries, and demographic factors. The analysis uses individual-level data collected by the Pew Research Center in their survey, 'What the World Thinks 2002: How Global Publics View Their Lives, Their Countries, The World, America.' These data are augmented with national-level data on the economy, the size of the Muslim population, governance, and the level of terrorism. I find that support for terrorism is positively correlated with anti-Americanism, the belief that Islam should play a significant role in politics, the belief that the United States poses a threat to Islam, and, surprisingly, the perception of free expression. Moreover, education, perceived state of the economy, and support for democracy are not found to have any significant relationship to support for terrorism. [...] Summary of Correlates of Terrorism CORRELATION: Islam should play large role in politics (+); Islam does play large role in politics (+); U.S. threat to Islam (+); Home government threat to Islam (-); Perceived free expression (+); State efficiency (-); Age (-); Female (+). UNCORRELATED: General threat to Islam; Religious threat to Islam; Attitude toward the United States; Attitude toward democracy; Perceived state of the economy; Education; Marital status."
