Myanmar Gas: The Pipeline Psywar
Chennai Centre For China Studies, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Extract: "In a despatch of April 21, 2007, China's official Hsinhua news agency has quoted the SINOPEC, the state-owned Chinese oil company, as stating that the construction of the China-Myanmar oil pipeline is expected to start this year. According to the company, at the beginning of April, 2007, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) approved the Sino-Myanmar oil pipeline, which would link Myanmar's deep-water port of Sittwe (Akyab) with Kunming, the capital of the Yunnan Province. It did not, however, indicate when the pipeline would be completed. [...] 3. The emerging picture is that Myanmar has allowed Chinese companies to construct two pipelines connecting the Arakan coast with Yunnan -- one for oil and the other for gas. While the oil pipeline will start from Sittwe, it is not yet clear from where the gas pipeline will start. Most probably, from Kyaukpu. Both the pipelines will be used to transport part of China's imports of oil and gas from West Asia and Africa in order to reduce the dependence on the Malacca Strait. Subsequently, these pipelines will also be used to transport any oil or gas that may be discovered by the Chinese companies to whom contracts for exploration in the Arakan area have been awarded." - b.raman

Classical Historiography for Chinese History
Program in East Asian Studies, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ, US
Supplied note: "[The site has been] updated as follows: 1) all entries are alphabetized within each section; 2) the romanization has been switched to Pinyin. Although this website uses Pinyin, it splits up words into phonemes, making Chinese appear to be a monosyllabic language. The Library of Congress has preferred a character-by-character romanization, and thus we follow LOC guidelines. But users of this website should note that the division into words (ci) as opposed to characters (zi) is still the usual basis for the Pinyin romanization of Chinese in China and most libraries there; 3) the entire site is now equipped with a Google internal and global search engine, in addition to the guided Table of Contents. 4) the guided Table of Contents for the Electronic Resources part has been enhanced and reclassified to be intuitively clearer. - bae."

In my earlier article, I had referred to the extensive roots taken by the Pakistanised version of Al Qaeda in the UK and the danger of this spreading to the US and Canada. 2. From this, one should not jump to the conclusion that the US is not yet facing threats from home-grown jihadis of Pakistani origin in its territory. It has been since the 1980s. [....] A saving grace is that the US intelligence has a better awareness than the British of the dangers that could arise from its population of Pakistani origin and has been keeping a tight watch on them. The British are paying a heavy price for their negligence till now." - b.raman
