Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora (CSCSD)
Pacific & Asian History, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, ANU, Canberra, Australia
Self-description: "The Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora is the only centre in the southern hemisphere for research on people of Chinese descent in Southeast Asia and the Southwest Pacific. The Centre seeks to stimulate and encourage scholarship that reflects the diversity of and intercourse among areas, cultures and political economies in the region, and contributes critically to the field of knowledge. [...]
Research Priorities - We will focus our research on: * The historical formation of Chinese identities. * Much writing on Chinese in Southeast Asia lacks a real historical dimension. Although we commonly use the term "Chinese", our understanding of what constituted Chinese identity or ethnicity for the individuals who came south from various parts of the China coast is a very complex issue. One special interest would be in the different dialect groups and their various business networks overseas and how these elements contribute to or distracted from their so-called "Chineseness" for themselves and how their distinctive sub-ethnic business networks and relationships to China, to Chinese nationalism and to the colonial powers operated at different times and in different places. * The regional factors which contributed to the constructions of a range of Chinese sub-ethnicities and networks. * The social, cultural and political gaps that traditionally separated the peoples to the north from those of the southern coasts. * The meaning of Southeast Asian and Southwest Pacific Chinese identity, both in relation to the Chinese state as well as to the various peoples of Southeast Asia among whom they settled. * Alternative versions of the histories of Southeast Asia and Southwest Pacific in which Chinese played an important part. * The issues beyond the conventional division of "Chinese" and "non-Chinese" issues. * The study of economic, social and business networks among various Chinese groups as well as with indigenous or local political and social elites. First International Conference of Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies, Feb 2007
Asia Research Institute (ARI), the National University of Singapore, Singapore.
Supplied note: "First International Conference of Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies, Date: 24/02/2007 - 26/02/2007, Venue: Banda Aceh, Indonesia, Organisers: Prof REID, Anthony, Prof FEENER Michael, Dr DALY Patrick [...]
Aceh has been the focus of an unprecedented international rehabilitation effort in response to the devastating earthquake and tsunami of 26 December 2004. During this process it has also begun the transition from war to peace as a consequence of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Indonesian Government and the Aceh Independence Movement on 15 August 2005. At the mid-point of the reconstruction effort, and 18 months on from the peace, it is necessary to take stock of what the world has learned from Aceh, and Aceh from the world, during these processes. This will be the first international conference to bring together both experts on Acehnese society and history, and those who have been intensively concerned with post-tsunami developments. Conscious of Aceh's historic role as Indonesia's point of intersection with the Indian Ocean world, the Conference will play particular attention to the geographical, historical, commercial and religious factors that linked Aceh to these two worlds. As the effects of the tsunami were felt around the Indian Ocean littoral, comparative analyses of both disaster relief and peace-making in this region will be welcomed.
This conference is sponsored by the Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency for Aceh and Nias (BRR) and the Asia Research Institute, NUS, Singapore. The cost of invited speakers will be met by funds generously provided by BRR. Participants should plan to arrive in Banda Aceh on February 23rd. The Conference will be followed, on 27th February, by a planning meeting of invited potential stakeholders in an International Centre for Aceh and Indian Ocean Studies.
The papers of the conference will form the basis of a path-breaking book, to be published in both English and Indonesian.
The three-day conference will contain the following panels: 1. Seismology, geology and environmental impact 2. History of Aceh and the Indian Ocean world 3. Language, culture and society 4. Post-tsunami relief, reconstruction and disaster mitigation 5. Conflict resolution, peace-making and democratisation issues 6. Islam, law and society - aar."

Bibliography: [Western Early] Books on China in Vienna, Austria
Institut of History, The University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria
Supplied note: "The bibliography 'Books on China' aims to provide on-line information on the China-related holdings of Western-language books in major libraries at Vienna, Austria (Vienna University Library, Austrian National Library, Library of the Austrian State Archives). So far, about 3100 titles from the period 1477-1939 have been located in the various catalogues of these collections. Work on this bibliography is still in progress. - gl."
Self-description: "Over centuries, Viennese libraries acquired - among many other treasures - rich materials on China: Dictionaries, early translations of Chinese classics, travelogues, maps, atlanti. The earliest examples for materials dealing with China date from the late 15th century (first printed edition of a German version of Marco Polo's account). Over four centuries - until the 1850s - Viennese libraries collected books on China (and on Asia in general), in a variety of languages. The existence of these treasures in Vienna is widely unknown to the scientific community. This project intends to list all China-related holdings of printed books (published up to 1939) held in the Oesterreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library), the Universitaetsbibliothek Wien (Vienna University Library; including the main library and the holdings of the various department libraries as well), and the Library of the Austrian State Archives. All copies existing in the holdings of these libraries [... are] included in this bibliography."

Extract: "A successful Chinese destruction of one of its old and disused weather satellites orbiting 537 miles up in space by firing a ground-based missile at it on January 11, 2007, is significant for four reasons. Firstly, it underlines once again its determination to project Chinese military capabilities on land, in the sea, in air and in space unmindful of the concerns [...] of the international community. Secondly, it [...] casts doubts once again on the benign intentions of China's military modernisation programme. Thirdly, it highlights its determination to achieve not only economic, but also military parity with the US. Fourthly, it underlines its ability to conceal vital elements of its military modernisation programme away from the [...] Western intelligence agencies [...] Annexed below is an article on China's Space Programme written by me on January 11, 2001, which is available at http://www.saag.org/papers2/paper182.htm" - b.raman

Symposium on Chinese Export Trade Ceramics in Southeast Asia (Singapore), Mar 2007
Asia Research Institute (ARI), the National University of Singapore, Singapore.
Supplied note: "Symposium on Chinese Export Trade Ceramics in Southeast Asia, 12 - 14 March 2007, National Library Board, Imagination & Possibilities Room (Level 5) 100 Victoria Street, Singapore
The Symposium will bring together archaeologists and ceramic scholars from China, Southeast Asia, and the western hemisphere, highlighting recent advances in archaeological, maritime, and ceramic research on the ceramic export trade. The three main themes for the symposium are:
1) Maritime Archaeology Shipwrecks and port sites are important sources of information regarding the transport and exchange of ceramics. Important new discoveries in this field are revolutionizing our knowledge of early Southeast Asian commerce, both within the region and with China.
2) Production Centers of Ceramics In the past few years, Chinese archaeologists have conducted work at kiln complexes in southern and eastern China which produced many of the wares which are found in Southeast Asian archaeological sites. This burst of activity is rectifying a long period of relative neglect of this subject. Though much remains to be accomplished, preliminary results have already begun to create a much clearer picture of the ebb and flow of production in different parts of China.
3) Consumers of Trade Ceramics This subject has received the most attention in the past. Much of our early knowledge of Chinese ceramic trade with Southeast Asia was derived from burial sites, often looted, where intact items were found. The archaeology of settlements began later, but has also yielded significant insight into the role of imported ceramics in the economy and belief systems of Southeast Asia. The importance of the export ceramic industry for China's economy in the period from the 9th to the 15th centuries is another subject which new research is beginning to clarify.

Rights of Women & Minorities in Islam, CSID's 8th Annual Conf., Apr 2007
Center For The Study Of Islam And Democracy (CSID), Washington, DC, US
Supplied note: "Center For The Study Of Islam And Democracy, Call for Paper Proposals - The Rights of Women and Minorities in Islam and Muslim Societies
CSID's 8th Annual Conference, Friday, April 27, 2007, Washington DC
Muslim-majority societies are broadly perceived in the West as falling short of adhering to universal human rights standards when it comes to women and minorities, particularly religious minorities. Facile explanations are often offered to explain this phenomenon, among them the supposed immutability of the Shari'a or the religious law. This conference [www.csidonline.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=366&Itemid=26] aims to explore these critical issues in a more rigorous, academic manner from a variety of perspectives and interrogate commonly held assumptions about the rights of women and minorities among both Muslims and non-Muslims. [...] Both broad theoretical studies and specific case studies are welcome.
Paper proposals (no more than 400 words) are due by January 25, 2007 and should be sent to: Prof. Asma Afsaruddin, Chair, Conference Program Committee 1625 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Suite 601, Washington, D.C. 20036 Tel.: (202) 265-1200. Fax: (202) 265-1222. E-mail: conference--at--islam-democracy.org
