India & Japan: Democracy as a Strategic Weapon
Institute For Topical Studies, Chennai, India
Supplied note: "The latest paper of the Institute For Topical Studies, A-2/3, Bharathi Dasan Colony, K.K.Nagar, Chennai---600078, India, on the above subject is now available at the web site of the South Asia Analysis Group (SAAG), New Delhi, at [the URL below] - br."
Extract: "India's Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, visited Japan from December 13 to 16, 2006, at the invitation of Mr. Shinzo Abe, the Japanese Prime Minster. This was in return for a visit paid by the then Japanese Prime Minister Mr. Junichiro Koizumi, to India in the last week of April, 2005. [...] Grandiose ideas of strategic relationships have little meaning without substantial economic content and without intellectual attraction to each other. Both are missing in the case of the India-Japan relationship. [...] According to Japanese official figures, Japanese businessmen invested US $ 170 million in India last year, less than three per cent of the amount they invested in China. Japanese political leaders and government policy-makers may be excited by the idea of joining hands with democratic India for promoting a new Asia, but Japanese businessmen feel themselves more comfortable in authoritarian China than in democratic India." - b.raman

Scrolls of the Mongol Invasions of Japan
Asian Studies Program, Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, US.
Self-description: "Built in collaboration with Professor Tom Conlan, the [13th, 18th, 19th, 21st c.] Scrolls of the [13th c.] Mongol Invasions of Japan web site is an ongoing project investigating the use of technology for viewing ancient scrolls and documents. Utilizing Adobe Flash and image compression technology from Zoomify, we give users the ability to view the scrolls in unique ways. Because the scrolls are displayed in the traditional linear format and read right to left, it more accurately depicts their original narrative intent. Because the fragments of these particular scrolls were lost over the centuries, their true order has long been disputed. This site allows users to compare the different versions of scroll fragments that have been assembled into different versions while maintaining the linear narrative format. Using the Guided Tour feature, Professor Conlan is able to point out specific areas in the scrolls and guide discussions about their meaning. Interactive glossary and translations also provide insight into the culture and warfare of ancient Japan. Planned future enhancements include interactive maps, audio and video commentary, animated demos and the ability for users to annotate and reorder the scroll fragments into their own interpretations."

India & Pakistan: Can Mindsets & Perceptions Change?

Extract: "Perceptions and mindsets have to be examined at three levels----individuals, society and the State institutions. Under State institutions, one could include the ruling class, the civilian bureaucracy, the Armed Forces and the intelligence community. 2. Certain general observations would be in order: In India, negative perceptions about Pakistan are more widespread at all the three levels in the urban areas, but in smaller towns and rural areas the negative perceptions are not that evident. Even in the urban areas, the negative perceptions are stronger in North India than in South India. In contrast, in Pakistan, the negative perceptions about India are stronger in the small towns and in the rural areas than in the urban cities. People in the urban cities tend to be more positive towards India." - b.raman

Finding aid for the 'International Society Records' [Chinese Culture Institute Records]
Archives and Special Collections, Northeastern University Libraries, Boston, MA, US
Supplied note: "Northeastern University Libraries is pleased to announce that the historical records of the International Society have been organized, and a guide to the collection is available online at [the URL below]
The International Society grew out of the Chinese Economic Development Council in 1979. Formerly known as the Center for Chinese Art and Culture (1979), the China Institute (1980), and the Chinese Culture Institute (1981), the Society's original goal was to support Chinese culture and heritage among Boston's Chinese community, and to promote the City's understanding of that culture. In 2000, the organization's name changed to the International Society, and its mission shifted to promoting understanding of cultural differences through multicultural arts programming.
The 2.5 cubic feet of material document the cultural events produced by the Society, as well as its daily activities. The Society organized festivals, lectures, workshops, and a summer camp, and sponsored artists and musicians, including Yo Yo Ma. The collection contains promotional literature about these events, such as press releases, posters, flyers and mailings, exhibit catalogs, postcards, and calendars of events. Also documented are the programs of the Society's art gallery, theatre, and music and dance ensemble. The collection also contains the administrative records of Dr. Doris Chu, president of the society. Records are in both English and Chinese. - jk."

Thomas H. Hahn Docu-Images - Contemporary Transformations of China
Thomas H. Hahn Docu-Images, Ithaca, NY, US
Self-description: "The galleries on display here belong to the category of documentary photography. The main subject area is China and that country's rather rapid transformation from a rural to an urban-centered society. Taken together, these galleries constitute a visual archive that for the most part is meant to capture and to preserve information (or 'evidence of certain developments' perhaps). Only sometimes are these photographs suggestive or interpretive. [...]
As of October 2006, specific themes prevalent in these galleries are: 1. Chinese modern art; 2. Urbanization and architecture (both historical and modern); 3. Supplied note: "Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) Program Royal University of Phnom Penh at IFL, Application Deadline: February 1st, 2007, Duration of Program: June 18 - July 27, 2007
The Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) Program is an intensive six-week advanced Khmer language-training program held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It aims to fill in a void in the academic community by providing 3rd year level students a 'one-of-a-kind' opportunity to acquire the linguistic foundation necessary to engage in academic research, professional discourse, and cultural interaction with all segments of Cambodian society.
This immersion program focuses on advanced-level language acquisition and consists of a structured academic program of four hours of task-based language instruction every morning and to three hours of pre-arranged field trip site visits and related task-based learning activities in the afternoons and weekends as a group or as individual work. This ASK course is equivalent to two semesters of study. Instruction is given in small-individualized groups taught by in-country Khmer linguists in Phnom Penh. They have extensive experience in teaching Khmer as a foreign language. The six-week program will be capped by a written and oral presentation of each participant's mini research project. Participants are encouraged to select their own topic at the beginning of the program. [...] This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays, and Group Projects. Vanished Kingdoms: The Wulsin Photographs of Tibet, China, and Mongolia, 1921-1925
Burke Museum, University of Washington, Seattle, US
Supplied note: "'Vanished Kingdoms: The Wulsin Photographs of Tibet, China, and Mongolia, 1921-1925,' is an exhibit of 39 compelling color images of rare colored lantern slides taken by two young American explorers, Janet E. and Frederick R. Wulsin, Jr., from the collections of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. Janet was one of the first American women explorers to reach western China, Inner Mongolia, and Tibet. Together they produced this series of superb photographs of the Ta'er, Labuleng and Zhuoni lamaseries, religious ceremonies, and landscapes they encountered during their expedition for the National Geographic Society in 1923. Shown publicly for the first time, this traveling exhibit is organized by PEM in conjunction with the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. The Silkroad Foundation is a co-sponsor of the exhibition. The exhibition runs from November 4, 2006-February 7, 2007. Further information may be found on the Burke Museum website [at the URL below].

Sacred Portraits from Tibet - Augmenting the photographs of Vanished Kingdoms through February 4, is 'Sacred Portraits from Tibet,' [www.washington.edu/burkemuseum/exhibits/sacred/ - ed.] a display of Burke Museum thangkas, large, delicately painted Tibetan religious paintings. Thangkas typically feature portraits of arhats or Buddhist saints and important lamas or Buddhist teachers. Paintings made between the 17th and early 20th centuries demonstrate not only the rich iconography of Tibetan Buddhist tradition, but also the exquisite painterly skills in portraiture and illustration. - dcw."

Extract: "The hopefully positive outcome of the visit of President Hu Jintao to India from November 20 to 23, 2006, was the indication, which started coming in even before his visit, of a seeming change in China's attitude to India's quest for civilian nuclear energy technology and equipment in order to meet the growing energy demands of its fast-growing economy. [...] If China unconditionally supports the follow-up action on the Indo-US nuclear deal without linking it to its proposal to supply nuclear power stations to Pakistan, that would indicate another positive and significant step forward in the Sino-Indian bilateral relations.
