China: Latest assessments of strategic experts on Sino-Indian ties
South Asia Analysis Group, India
Extract: "Paper no. 2039, 27.11.2006, China: Latest assessments of strategic experts on Sino-Indian ties by D. S. Rajan. [...] An analysis done by Beijing-based China International Institute for Strategic Studies (CIISS) (in Chinese language, November 21, 2006), on the subject of "future directions of the Sino-Indian border dispute", judged that "conditions are not ripe for a peaceful and satisfactory solution" to the dispute. [...] The Chinese media is now increasingly using the term "Southern Tibet" as their substitute to the name of Arunachal Pradesh given by India. This has no precedence and would seem to have definite implications in future for the Arunachal issue; the analysts are even speaking now in terms of China's recovery of "Southern Tibet", i.e Arunachal Pradesh. Also, some PRC analysts while examining their country's threat perceptions have visualised a future Indian military attack on the PRC. Why such an alarmist view when both nations are on a course of 'strategic partnership', is a moot question. [...] China International Institute for Strategic Studies is based in Beijing. Its website www.chinaiiss.org, was established in October 2002, with the stated aim of contributing to research on the PRC's international strategy. The head of the site is "Zhongguo Zhan Lue or China Strategy", apparently a pseudonym for a high level cadre. The site's "Experts Group" has one Li Peng as member. Further check is necessary on whether this person is the former Chinese Premier Li Peng. - d.s. rajan."
[The author of the paper, Mr D. S. Rajan, is former Director, Cabinet Secretariat, Government of India. - ed.]

The current 2.0 [i.e. Oct/Nov 2006 - ed.] release includes administrative units in contemporary China that have ethnic Tibetan populations, with detailed information only for the subunits of the Tibet Autonomous Region. We are now working on release 3.0 which will include details for all five provinces in China with Tibetan populations, and all politicial districts of Nepal as well. In the subsequent phase we will begin to incorporate our extensive data on Tibetan monasteries. [...] Note: You will need a Unicode font to view the Chinese characters, and another Unicode font to view Tibetan words.
Self-description (2): "We are now in the final weeks of the release of the first major update of the Gazetteer in three years. This new version will have much more rapid searching, display of Tibetan script and Devangari script as well as Chinese characters, improved interface, and a lot of improvements in the technology that will allow us from the fall of 2006 to finally begin to put all of our content into it. In addition, it will have administrative units for contemporary Nepal, as well as add all contemporary administrative units for Tibetan areas of Sichuan, Qinghai, Gansu and Yunan, in addition to the earlier data for the Tibet Autonomous Region."

The Asia--Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT)
Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane, QLD, Australia
Self-description: "The Asia--Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT) [2 December 2006 to 27 May 2007 - ed.] is the Queensland Art Gallery's flagship international contemporary art event. Established in 1993, it is the only major series of exhibitions in the world to focus exclusively on the contemporary art of Asia and the Pacific, including Australia. The fifth APT (APT5) will be the opening exhibition at the new Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) -- the Queensland Art Gallery's much-anticipated second building, which will be the largest gallery of modern art in Australia. APT5 will also be shown in the original Gallery building, with displays across both sites making the exhibition twice the scale of previous Triennials. APT5 will include around 270 works by 37 individual artists, filmmakers and performers, as well as two multi-artist projects. Highlights will include numerous commissioned works by artists such as Ai Weiwei (China), Dinh Q Le (Vietnam) and eX de Medici (Australia), as well as the Triennial's strongest representation of Pacific artists to date. Curated cinema and performance programs will bring a dynamic new dimension to APT5, exploring these media on a scale never before presented by the Triennial. More information on all aspects of the exhibition will be added progressively to this site in the lead-up to the public opening on 2 December 2006. [...]

East African Asians, the Wahindi: a blog
east-african-asians.blogspot.com, ?UK
Self-description: "The former British colonies of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania attracted Asian migration. When the British left, new policies relating to employment and trade were more geared to address the needs of local Africans. The Asians felt threatened. The Ugandan dictator Idi Amin expelled 90,000 Asians in 1972. The blog [est. Apr 2006 - ed.] covers East African Asians now living in Britain, Canada, USA, Europe and also those who returned to the Sub-Continent. Asians iving in East and Southern Africa are also of interest."
