Taking the State to Court - Public Interest Litigation and the Public Sphere in Metropolitan India [an EBook]
Asia House, Essen, Germany
Supplied note: "Online Publication: Taking the State to Court - Public Interest Litigation and the Public Sphere in Metropolitan India. By Hans Dembowski This is the online-documentation of a book first published [by Oxford University Press] in 2001. Rather, we believe that a sociological study, which was initially published by a leading academic publisher, should be available for public debate. Unfortunately, distribution of the original book was discontinued after the Calcutta High Court started contempt proceedings against the author, the publisher and several other parties. Five years on, however, the author has still not been officially notified by the court. The case is still pending, without having been heard in a long time. This, in turn, raises some poignantly recurring issues concerning the global potential of judicial censorship as well as the freedom of speech and expression. According to the fundamental principles of academic freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of the press, we believe that this book should be available to any interested public. Public discourse, after all, is essential for democracy as it serves to challenge and complement officially constituted publics. For this and no other reason do we present the study in this online edition. - kf."

Japanese Historical Text Initiative (JHTI)
University of California, Berkeley, CA, US
Supplied note: "The Japanese Historical Text Initiative (JHTI) is a rapidly expanding database made up of historical texts written during the last 1292 years. The original version of every paragraph in every text is cross-tagged with its English translation, making it possible for any researcher to see, on the same screen, both the original and English translation of any word or phrase appearing in any JHTI text.
The texts now included are of the following types:
* Ancient chronicles. These were compiled by officials of the Imperial Court in compliance with edicts handed down by occupants of the throne. The three oldest chronicles have been placed on JHTI: (1) the Kojiki (completed in 712 CE) and cross-tagged with its English translation by Donald L. Philippi, (2) the Nihon Shoki (completed in 720) with its translation by W. G. Aston, and (3) the Shoku Nihongi (covering 697 to 791) with its translation by J. B. Snellen.
* Ancient gazetteers. These texts were submitted by provincial officials in compliance with an Imperial edict handed down during the first half of the 8th century. Only a few remain. We are inserting on JHTI the original of the most complete extant gazetteer, the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki (submitted in 733), and linking it with Michiko Aoki's translation. Remaining portions of other gazetteers will be added and linked to translations by Professor Aoki.
* Ancient religo-civil code. In 927, at the close of the Great Reform period that began in 645, a comprehensive compilation of religious and civil law (the Engi Shiki) was submitted to the Imperial court. The first 10 books are made up of religious (Kami) law. All other books are devoted to civil law. The originals of the 10 Kami books have been placed on JHTI and cross-tagged with Felicia Gressitt Bock's translation.
* Medieval stories. After the Great Reform period, and during early years of the emerging feudal age, the most valuable historical texts were stories written about what was said and done by powerful leaders of aristocratic and military clans. Three are being placed on JHTI: (1) the Okagami (covering the years 866 to 1027) with the translation by Helen Craig McCullough; (2) the Eiga Monogatari (covering the years 794 to 1185) with the translation by William H. & Helen Craig McCullough; and (3) the Taiheiki (completed around 1371) with the Helen Craig McCullough translation. Other translated texts of this type will be added later.
* Medieval and early-modern interpretive histories. Between 1219 and 1712, three great interpretive histories were written, mirroring the religious and political interests of their authors. The originals and translations of two are being placed on JHTI: (1) the Gukansho (completed in 1219) has been linked with the Delmer M. Brown and Ichiro Ishida translation, and (2) the Jinno Shotoki (completed in 1339) with the H. Paul Varley translation. The third history of this type, the Tokushi Yoron (completed in 1712), will soon be cross-tagged and inserted with the Joyce Ackroyd translation.
* The Japanese state and Imperial Shinto. After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, and in response to increasing pressure from Western powers, the Japanese state adopted reforms in all areas of public life, including religious life. After World War II the government collected and published important religious orders issued between 1868 and 1945. This is entitled Meiji Igo Shukyo Kankei Horei Ruisan (Collection of Religious Orders Issued since the Beginning of Meiji) and it is being placed on JHTI, and is being linked with translations by Brown and Okubo. In 1937, the Japanese government published and distributed its official interpretation of Imperial Shinto. Entitled Kokutai no Hongi (Principles of Nation-Body) this has been placed on JHTI and cross-tagged with the English translation by John Owen Gauntlett.
* Scriptures of Japan's New Religions. [...T]eachings [...] rooted in the Lotus Sutra (Hokke-kyo) and this Sutra, thought to be the earliest of the Mahayana scriptures, will be placed on JHTI and cross-tagged with the English translation by Banno Kato et al and revised by W. L. Soothill and William Schiffer et al. The Ofudesaki written by the founder of Tenri-kyo will also be added, and linked with the translation by Iwao P. Hino. [...]
Since the Initiative is ongoing and collaborative, we appreciate receiving recommendations for the addition of other texts, suggestions for the improvement or the addition of translations and references, and offers to publish Japanese historical studies electronically. These should be addressed to Yuko Okubo, JHTI Coordinator, East Asian Library, UC Berkeley, at: (yokubo--at--library.berkeley.edu). - yo."

Supplied note: "The Argentinean Association of Korean Studies invites you to The Second National Congress of Korean Studies, Organized by the Center for Korean Studies, National University of La Plata, La Plata, Argentina SECOND NATIONAL CONGRESS OF KOREAN STUDIES KOREA AND ARGENTINA Mutual perceptions from a regional perspective August 24th and 25th, 2006
Thematic axis This Second Congress is aiming to deepen the knowledge gathered during the First Congress through the promotion of a wide call for those who are interested in giving new visions about the linkages between Korea and Argentina. Due to the level of development of Korean studies in Argentina, the Argentinean Association of Korean Studies (AAEC) considers that a wide call for papers would be much better in order to present different areas of knowledge. However, during their meetings, the Congress aspires to reflect a regional perspective of the Korean relationships; in other words, it aims to inspire the new papers to include their own local perspective of the relations between Korea and Argentina. We would like to show in the Congress a federal perspective, from North to South and from West to East.
Presentation Abstract: Deadline: July 30th, 2006 Those who are interested must send an abstract of 200 words showing the main ideas of the paper, title, name and last name of the author, University or Research Institute. In addition, the author must send his/her complete Curriculum Vitae Paper: Until August 15th 2006 Participants who will send a complete paper must do it according to the next conditions: no more than 15 pages including bibliography - double space, 28 lines, seventy characters with spaces and typography Times number 12. In addition, the paper must be accompanied by two paper copies and two diskettes. The papers must be send to this address: segundocongresoaaec--at--hotmail.com

[Maps of] Worldwide Islamic Terrorism Since September 11th
chromatism.net, Herndon, VA, US
Self-description: "The Bloody Borders Project. Worldwide Islamic Terrorism Since September 11th [...] Incident data through February 22, 2006, Pages republished March 16, 2006 [...] September 11th captured our attention. Prior to that, few in the West had taken serious notice of the extent and virulence of Islamic terrorism. It is both brutal and enduring. The name of this project was inspired by The Clash of Civilizations and The Remaking of World Order by Samuel P. Huntington [...]. The following quote is from an earlier article, 'The Clash of Civilizations?' in Foreigns Affairs from the summer issue of 1993: '[...] In Eurasia the great historic fault lines between civilizations are once more aflame. This is particularly true along the boundaries of the crescent-shaped Islamic bloc of nations from the bulge of Africa to central Asia. Violence also occurs between Muslims, on the one hand, and Orthodox Serbs in the Balkans, Jews in Israel, Hindus in India, Buddhists in Burma and Catholics in the Philippines. Islam has bloody borders.'
The goal here is to represent graphically the geography and the intensity of the violence on these 'bloody borders."

Statistical Data on Islamic Terror since 9/11/01
www.thereligionofpeace.com, Scottsdale, AZ, US

Self-description [contents]: "This list, of over 3,000 terrorist attacks [costing over 5340 lives by 12th Jul 06 - ed] committed by Muslims since 9/11/01 (a rate better than two per day), is incomplete because only a small percentage of attacks were picked up by international news sources, even those involving multiple loss of life. We included an attack if it was committed by Muslims in the name of Islam, and usually only if loss of life occurred (with a handful of exceptions where there were a very large number of injuries). In several cases, the victims are undercounted because deaths from trauma caused by the Islamists may occur in later days, despite the best efforts of medical personnel to keep the victims alive. We usually don't include action that occurs in combat situations, such as Iraq and Afghanistan, unless it involves particularly heinous terrorist tactics. [...]"

Self-description [http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/Pages/AboutSite.htm]: "This non-partisan, straight-shooting Website provides a list of attacks committed by determined Muslims in the name of their faith. We also provide news from the world of Islam and links to other sites with additional information on the religion for people that want to better understand the violence on the part of thousands and the support or apathy on the part of millions.
Islam is a broad faith and it would be wrong for anyone to stereotype Muslim individuals. Most, in fact, are perfectly fine, either in spite of Islam or because of their interpretation of it. In fact, there are exceptional Muslims whose faith gives them character - the tiny handful of Muslim-Americans, for example, who choose to tell the rest of the world that America is not a legitimate target for terrorism. They stand in sharp contrast to American groups like CAIR and MPAC, which use their influence to complain of petty grievances and inflame hatred against a country that tries hard to accommodate their faith in spite of the violence.
On the other hand, however, Islam is clearly not a religion of peace. The ridiculous level of violence committed in the name of this religion is staggering, despite the many billions of dollars that are spent each year to prevent attacks.
Nor should Westerners continue to think that the solution to the violence is greater understanding and tolerance for Islam, as Muslim apologists often imply when commenting on high-profile terror attacks. It is the killers and their supporters who need to learn understanding and tolerance, not their victims.
Islam will be a peaceful religion when Muslims stop preaching hate, stop killing in the name of Allah, and stop remaining apathetic to the violence. Until this happens, we [email: thereligionofpeace--at--yahoo.com] will faithfully document each of the reasons why this is anything but a 'Religion of Peace.'"

www.danielpipes.org, Philadelphia, PA, US
Supplied note: "Trouble in Londonistan by Daniel Pipes, New York Sun, July 11, 2006, [NY Sun title: 'What British Muslims Think']
The London transport bombings of July 2005 prompted no less than eight surveys of Muslim opinion in the United Kingdom within the year. When added to two surveys from 2004, they provide in the aggregate a unique insight into the thinking of the nearly 2 million Muslims in 'Londonistan.' The hostile mentality they portray is especially alarming when one recalls that London's police commissioner, Sir Ian Blair, recently said that the threat of terrorism 'is very grim' because there are, 'as we speak, people in the United Kingdom planning further atrocities.' [...] In sum, more than half of British Muslims want Islamic law and 5% endorse violence to achieve that end. These results demonstrate that Britain's potential terrorists live in a highly nurturing community.' - dp."
