Extract: "11. [...E]ven fifty years after the flight of the Dalai Lama from Tibet, the Chinese have not been able to stamp out his memory from the minds of large sections of the Tibetan people. The Chinese are determined that the next Dalai Lama would be a man of their choice. They would not accept any incarnation as determined according to the Buddhist tradition by the Tibetans in Tibet and abroad. 12. If and when they try to impose their own Dalai Lama on the Tibetans, what would be the reaction in Tibet? Would there be violence? What would be the reaction of the large Tibetan refugee community in India? [...] 14. The Chinese may not talk about it in public, but they are concerned over the emerging close relations between India and the US---not because of the military potential of an India-US axis, but because of its moral potential. They fear the likely infectious effect of our democracy in their border areas more than our nuclear weapons. [...] - b. raman."

The Wa Language Dictionary, with Burmese (Myanmar), Chinese, and English Glosses
The School of Oriental and African Studies, London, UK
Self-description: "A Dictionary of the Wa Language with Burmese (Myanmar), Chinese, and English Glosses and Internet Database for Minority Languages of Burma (Myanmar).
Wa is a member of the Northern Mon-Khmer language family. More specifically, it is the major language of the Palaungic branch of Mon-Khmer. (See map and chart of Austroasiatic languages, which includes, primarily, the Mon-Khmer family.) Wa is spoken by about one million people in an area on the border between China's Yunnan Province and the Shan State of the Union of Myanmar (Burma). [...] The only Wa dictionaries which exist are a few Wa-Chinese dictionaries which are either limited or out-dated.
The SOAS Wa Dictionary Project is a three-year effort (2003-2006), funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council to produce a high-quality dictionary, translating Wa into Chinese, Burmese/Myanmar and English. The project uses advanced techniques in corpus-based lexicography, centred on a database and Internet resource, which will also be suitable for other languages spoken in Burma/Myanmar besides Wa after the life of the project."

Sudhir Kaicker, New Delhi, India
Self-description: "SanskritaPradipika [a little lamp for Sanskrit], a freely downloadable e-tutor for the Sanskrit language, is intended to help English-speaking people learn Sanskrit, as well as the Devanagari script in which the language is written today. The medium of discourse is English, but I will be gratified if the English text is translated to other European and Asian languages, so that the material becomes available to as large a number of aspirants as possible.
The tutor has been written in the Java programming language. In principle, this is supposed to ensure that the package will run without problems on any sort of computer that can be connected to the Internet. The fact is, though, that SanskritaPradipika has been created on ancient IBM-compatibles powered by Intel Pentium II chips, running WindowsXP. Much testing therefore needs to be done before the software can certifiably be said to be platform independent, and to run without error on other types of computer, such as an Apple, or a Sun Workstation. In this area too collaboration would be most welcome.
Seven chapters and a section on diacritics are being offered at this time. Other chapters will shortly be made available. If you have an IBM or compatible PC running some version of Windows, click the Download button to install both the JRE as well as SanskritaPradipika. [...] However since the size of the software is large (24 MB), and downloads may sometimes [be lengthy....] we do offer to mail, at the cost of the recipient, a CD for use on Intel/Windows platforms to most destinations worldwide. For more information, or to send your comments, please write to: sudhir_kaicker--at--hotmail.com"
Chapters of the e-tutor: * Introduction; * Vovels; *Consonants; * Conjuncts; * Word Building; * Sandhi; * The Sanscrit Verbs; * Declensions; * Special Cases; * Simple Sentences; * Credits;

RISA-L: The Religion in South Asia Section Academic Discussion List
University of San Diego, San Diego, CA, US
Self-description: "The Religion in South Asia Section (RISA) is a special-interest group within the American Academy of Religion (AAR) (www.aarweb.org). Its purpose is to further the academic study of the religious traditions of South Asia, both classical and modern. The purpose of RISA-L, the email list of RISA, is to provide a forum in which the professional scholars active in RISA may exchange ideas and information on matters pertaining to their research and teaching. RISA-L subscriptions are not open to the general Internet public. Subscriptions are normally available only to AAR members with terminal degrees in related academic disciplines researching and/or teaching in the area of religion in South Asia. Guest subscriptions are available to other active scholars with such qualifications, or to graduate students currently doing work in these fields. It is assumed that subscribers are familiar with current methodologies and assumptions in academic religious studies. These eligibility criteria are enforced strictly to help ensure that the discussion remains as much as possible on an informed, professional, and academic level. Note: Undergraduate students in related disciplines may obtain subscriptions to RISA-L if they are sponsored by a faculty mentor who is an AAR member and a RISA-L subscriber."
