The journal, a pioneering and the only publication of this kind in the world, provides virtually daily abstracts and reviews of new/updated online resources of significance to research, teaching and communications dealing with Asian Studies. It is published by the Internet Publications Bureau, RSPAS, National Institute for Asia and the Pacific, ANU. The periodical forms a key element of the global, cooperative project Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library. For further details see a page About the Asian Studies WWW Monitor. The journal is complemented by its sister publication Pacific Studies WWW Monitor which was established in April 2000.

Asia Policy Point (APP)
AAP, Washington, DC, USA.
Supplied note: "JIAP Becomes ASIA POLICY POINT [...] (formerly Japan Information Access Project, JIAP). As of January 2006, the Japan Information Access Project (JIAP) will change its operational name to Asia Policy Point (APP). But don't worry, the name has changed, but we will remain the expert's resource and think tank on Asia. We believe that Asia Policy Point better reflects what we are: the source for a multi-dimensional understanding of U.S. policy toward an inter-dependent, contemporary Asia. In operating terms, we will continue to provide you with unbiased, factual information about Asia and will continue to show you innovative perspectives on the region.
Japan will remain a central point of our activities and JIAP will continue as an internal program of AAP. All of our contact information remains the same. [...] Get the facts at: http://www.jiaponline.org - Asia Policy Point HQ"
[In Mar 2001 the JIAP site had the AS WWW Monitor 3-star (Useful resource) rating; and the 5-star (Essential resource) rating in Jan 2003. An updated rating for the AAP site will be provided by the Monitor in the near future - ed.]

Extract: "The jihad in Afghanistan would not have made the progress that it has but for the tacit complicity of the Pakistani authorities. This complicity has been in the form of inaction against their sanctuaries, recruitment and infrastructure in Pakistani territory. Pakistan's objective has been two-fold: In the short-term, to buy peace for itself in Pakistani territory outside the tribal areas. [...] In the long-term, to preserve the Taliban as an instrument to retrieve Pakistan's strategic position in Afghanistan if one day the US-led coalition withdraws from there. - b. raman."

Extract: "In the first maritime terrorism incident of 2006, one or two suspected suicide naval bombers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rammed an explosive-laden boat, resembling a small fishing vessel, against a Dvora fast attack vessel of Israeli design belonging to the Sri Lankan Navy outside the Tricomalee harbour in the early hours of January 7, 2006. At the time of the attack, the boat had 15 naval personnel of whom 13 were killed. Two were rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy. Two Dvora vessels of the SL Navy were patrolling the area, of which one was targeted and sunk by the Sea Tigers of the LTTE. 2. This was the third LTTE attack on Sri Lankan naval personnel since Mr. Mahinda Rajpakse assumed office as the Sri Lankan President after his election victory in November last and indicated a reversal of the commitments of his predecessors to seek a solution to the ethnic conflict between the Sinhalese majority and the Tamil minority based on a federal model. - b. raman."
