Quake Impact on Jihadi Terrorism

Extract: "6. The Al Qaeda, the Taliban and other members of the IIF, who have their infrastructure in Pakistani territory, have not come out with any admissions regarding the losses and damages suffered by them. One should not over-estimate the damages suffered by the training infrastructure of the jihadi terrorist organisations. Their training camps generally consist of tents and other makeshift structures, which can be shifted from place to place to evade detection and targeting by the US intelligence agencies. Even if they have been damaged, the human casualties are likely to be low. - b. raman."

Supplied note: "Dear Colleagues, In May 2005 we have celebrated our 10th birth anniversary. We want to inaugurate the 11th year of the International Journal of Tantric Studies with vol. 7-1 [at the URL below] Paper: 'Beyond The Hindu Frontier, Jaina-Vaisnava Syncretism in the Gujarati Diaspora', 1st part, by Dr. Peter Fluegel (Chair of the Centre of Jaina Studies, SOAS). Extract: "The Government and the people of Pakistan have been coping, as best as they can, with the help of a flood of international assistance, with the colossal tragedy which struck them on October 8, 2005, in the form of a massive earthquake which has devastated practically the whole of Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK) and large parts of the district of Manshera and other areas in the North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). [...] 2. The total fatalities in POK are officially estimated at 20,000 plus and unofficially at 30,000 plus. Those in the NWFP at 3,000 plus and unofficially at 8,000 plus. [...] No estimate is available of the damages suffered by the[..] terrorist organisations as a result of the quake. Many foreign nationals from Indonesia, Thailand, the US, the UK and other countries were reportedly undergoing training in the camps in the Manshera district. Only the LET has so far admitted that its infrastructure in the POK has been severely damaged. A spokesman for the Jamat-ud-Dawa, the political wing of the LET, admitted at Islamabad on October 8, 2005, that mosques, hospitals, schools and madrasas run by the LET in the POK were destroyed by the quake. He added: 'Many of our members have been killed. They are in scores while several others are still trapped under the rubble.' - b. raman."

Extract: "14. One has reasons to be more worried about the deteriorating situation in Southern Thailand than about the situation in Indonesia. What started as sporadic acts of terrorism in the beginning of last year have been transformed into sustained acts of insurgency ---marked by a steady flow of volunteers and with a mix of modus operandi involving the use of hand-held weapons as well as explosives reminiscent of the MO adopted by the jihadi terrorist organisations of Pakistan and Bangladesh such as the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LEJ), the Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HUJI) and the LET. One sees more the finger-prints of these organisations in Southern Thailand than those of the JI. [...] 17. While there are as yet no indications that the acts of jihadi terrorism in Indonesia are being commanded and controlled from outside the affected region, there is clear-cut evidence that the jihadi terrorism in Southern Thailand is being commanded and controlled from Bangladesh and Pakistan. - b. raman."

Extract: "The Iran nuclear issue poses a serious policy dilemma for India: how to co-operate with the international community (read US) in preventing the emergence of another military nuclear power with security implications for India, while not allowing our traditional good relations with Iran to be jeopardized? [...] India has to be more cautious in its policies towards the Islamic world than the US. [...] Keeping all these factors in view, India's national interests and security requirements would have been better served by an abstention during the voting in the International Atomic Energy Agency at Vienna than by an open alignment with the US and other Western countries. - b. raman."
