Chinese Studies Postgraduate Forum 29-30 June 2005
The University of Melbourne, Parkville, VIC, Australia
Supplied note: "The University of Melbourne Chinese Studies Research Group (CSRG) invites postgraduates to participate in this inaugural pre-CSAA 2005 postgraduate forum. The aim of the forum is to provide an opportunity for postgraduates from around Australia researching within the field of Chinese Studies to informally meet and share ideas about their research experiences.
The forum will revolve around four research themes and provide 12 postgraduates with the chance to present a paper in an informal peer environment with some positive feedback and discussions. Each panel will also include some of Australia's leading academics as discussants, including: Professor Geremie Barme (ANU), Professor David Holm (UM), Dr Gloria Davies (Monash), and Dr Antonia Finnane (UM).
The conference themes stem from the difficulty of approaching Chinese Studies from numerous disciplinary backgrounds and across cultural and linguistic borders. The conference emphasis is on inter-connections, boundaries and junctions within Chinese studies. The theme is intended to reflect the zones where disciplines, topics and languages overlap or appear fractured.
The Keynote Speaker will be Dr Luigi Tomba from ANU. In addition, Professor Ellen Widmer from Wesleyan University (USA) will host a small workshop for those interested in nineteenth and early twentieth century Chinese literature.
To register interest in attending only (not presenting) please email: chinesestudies-conf2005@unimelb.edu.au. - bhy."

Lingua Mongolia: Classical Mongolian grammar and tutorials
Lingua Mongolia, Aberystwyth, Wales, UK
Supplied note: "Classical Mongolian script, grammar, and translation tutorials and resources - erep."
Self-description: "The aim of this site [est. Dec 2004] is to assist in the task of learning Classical Mongolian, the literary language of the Mongols, which underwent very few changes from the time of the Mongol Empire to the early part of the twentieth century. [...] [T]he resources contained on this site will be of little use to those wishing to speak a modern dialect of Mongolian. Although time permitting I may add some Khalkha tutorials at some later date. If you have not studied Mongolian before, then the script tutorials will be the first place to start - here you can learn how to write Mongolian in the Uighur script. [...] If you have previously studied Mongolian then you might find the grammar section to be a useful on-line reference. Otherwise, the main bulk of the site is devoted to a step by step translation of the Chinese transcription of the 'Secret History', with full notes, and grammatical/linguistic analysis. There are also plans to include a searchable Mongolian dictionary of the classical language. [...] Due to the problems associated with displaying Asian languages on the Internet, Mongolian and Chinese text are displayed as graphics rather than system fonts."

Burma Economic Watch (BEW) e-journal
Economics Department, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia
Self-description: "Burma Economic Watch is a periodial that aims to provide up-to-date and reliable data , analysis and commentary on the economy of Burma. Information on the Burmese economy is both difficult to obtain and notoriously unreliable. Comment and analysis is often only scarcely less so. Our aim is to make a modest contribution to improving each, and to encourage informed debate. BEW is produced by an editorial team of scholars devoted to the study of Burma and its economy."
Supplied note: "In a nutshell - what we're doing is converting BEW into a contributory journal, open to all (subject to the refereeing process below) who would like to add to the economic analyses of Burma. Of interest to academic members of our readership, BEW will be a formally refereed journal, with all that implies. Our motivation here is to align the relevant incentives (we are economists after all) - those that pertain to academics' publishing requirements, and ours to put out the best quality commentary we can on Burma's economy. [...] BEW will normally be published twice a year, but irregular issues may also be published. - st."
