Maritime Terrorism: An Indian Perspective
Institute For Topical Studies, Chennai, India

[Extract: "(Text of a paper presented at an International Conference on National Security in a Changing Region organised at Singapore on October 28 and 29, 2004, by the Asia-Pacific Conferences & Events Management (APCEM) with the endorsement and support of 'Defence News' )
Executive Summary
Apprehensions of major acts of maritime terrorism by the jihadi terrorist organisations, which are members of Osama bin Laden's International Islamic Front (IIF), continue to be high, but there are no clear indicators so far of their having already acquired the necessary capability for such acts. However, their nexus with trans-national mafia groups like the one headed by Pakistan-based Dawood Ibrahim has placed at their disposal maritime facilities which could be used and are being used for the clandestine movement of trained men and material required for land-based terrorist operations in other countries. Evidence of such nexus could be seen from Pakistan as well as Bangladesh. If there is any major act of maritime terrorism of a tactical nature against their perceived adversaries or of a strategic nature to disrupt the regional trade and economy staged by them in the South and the South-East Asian region , there is a strong possibility of its having originated from either Pakistan or Bangladesh. The Contemporary Okinawa Website
John Michael Purves, Kin-Cho, Kunigami-Gun, Okinawa-Ken, Japan
Supplied note: "A very nice Okinawa/Ryukyu site which may be of interest to others - gw."
Self-description: "The Contemporary Okinawa Website was established in 1995 as an educational, public resource for information on Okinawa in English. Given that I was then researching the economic, political, and social history of Okinawa (particularly the post-WWII period), and because there was a distinct lack of such information available to the reader in English, I thought a devoted website might fill the void. I believed then, as I still do, that the World Wide Web would become a powerful research tool to complement the physical libraries and other centres of information we use and love, but with far greater accessibility. My intention has always been to update this site regularly, but you know what they say about the best laid plans. I prefer these days to see it as a place where I can add bits here and there as my research continues. [...] john michael purves."

Introduction to Uyghur
Nathan Light, University of Toledo, OH, USA,
Self-description: "This page is an online introduction to Uyghur history and culture, and to my research on the politics of Uyghur musical history. Many of the sources I have linked here are biased presentations, either assuming with the Chinese that what they call the Xinjiang (meaning 'New Territory') Uygur Autonomous Region was always a part of China, or presenting the Uyghur nationalist view that there should be a separate Uyghur state. This makes these interesting materials to read, but highly rhetorical. The Xinjiang region is neither purely Uyghur, nor historically a part of China. [...] I have created this page in order to help non-Uyghurs to go beyond limited ideas about Uyghur culture and history based in popularized archeology and romanticized travel accounts, towards a deeper recognition of the Uyghurs' rich cultural traditions that endure despite present political difficulties and economic changes."
Site contents: (1) Basic Information Sources (Maps; Satellite Images; Online Databases; Uyghur Language; Unicode Google Searches); (2) News Sources; (3) Uyghur Culture (Music, Films, Art, Literature); (4) Activist and Nationalist Sites and Analysis; (5) Politics of history, especially lingering racist mythologies; (6) Travel and Photographs; (7) Bibliographies on Uyghur History, Literature and Culture; (8) Photos of Uyghur Life, Art and Material Culture.
