- timely, reliable and impartial information -

Edited by: Dr T. Matthew Ciolek

"The Asian Studies WWW Monitor" (ISSN 1329-9778) was established 21 April 1994. The journal, a pioneering and the only publication of this kind in the world, provides daily abstracts and reviews of new/updated online resources of significance to research, teaching and communications dealing with Asian Studies. It is published by the Internet Publications Bureau, RSPAS, National Institute for Asia and the Pacific, ANU. The periodical forms a key element of the global, cooperative project Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library. For further details see a page About the Asian Studies WWW Monitor. The journal is complemented by its sister publication Pacific Studies WWW Monitor which was established in April 2000.

Daily contents' summaries and evaluations published in the web edition of the Journal are disseminated also on the network via a mailing list.

Dear Readers,

During the month of October 2004 I will be travelling and be away from my office. This means that while the Monitor will continue to receive your kind addenda (http://coombs.anu.edu.au/regasia.html) with news of new and/or improved online Asian Studies' informational resources (blissfully, the whole procedure is automated) I will be able to look at your submissions and publish them in this e-journal only on my return, i.e. from early November onwards. Likewise, in October the "asia-www-monitor@coombs.anu.edu.au" mailing list will be dormant until I am back to my computer.

Bows and Regards to All,

T. Matthew Ciolek

Clan Homes in Fujian
www.chinadwelling.dk, Copenhagen, Denmark
Supplied note: "The tulous (clan homes in earth walled building) of the Fujian Province represent an epoch in China's history which is now closed, both technologically and socially. Today there are cheaper and faster methods of home construction. Nevertheless the interest in these very special structures has increased since the 1980's. They were built in response to a specific historical situation, with a cohesive clan structure and a weak state that could not manifest its power at the periphery. The reduced importance of the clan today is a logical result of changed social structure. The author, Jens Aaberg-Jorgensen, who is a Danish architect, focuses on three questions 1.Why do the tulou have such a closed and defensive nature? 2.Why are some tulou circular? 3.Why did the building of tulou cease? The article includes a survey of a round tulou: Zhenchenglou in Hongkeng. - jaj."

Sri Lanka & LTTE: Quo Vadis

[Extract: "A question often posed is, will there be another flare-up in Sri Lanka, if the deadlock continues? Most probably, there will be. The timing of such a flare-up will be decided by the LTTE [the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam - ed.] and not by the [Sri Lanka's] Government. A more important question is: If there is such a flare-up, how high would be the morale of the SL Army and how firm its determination to deny to the LTTE the fruits of a military victory? After having been used to peace for over two years, will the SL Army be prepared to fight with the same determination against the LTTE as it had done in the past? It is difficult to answer this question with any certainty at present. However, one can say that time and circumstances seem to be on the LTTE's side." - b.raman]
