Supplied note: " As part of the project Asian Civic Rights Network: National Security, Media and the Promotion of Rights in the Twenty First Century, we are delighted to announce Issue Two of the online 'AsiaRights Journal' is out now at [the URL below]
The online journal was officially launched at the conference of the Asian Studies Association of Australia (coombs.anu.edu.au/ASAA/) in Canberra on 1 July 2004. The journal focuses on the impact of contemporary security concerns on the rights of the people of the Asia Pacific region. The geographical coverage extends from Pakistan in the west to Papua New Guinea and the Pacific Islands in the east, and from Siberia in the north to Australia and New Zealand in the south.
Particular issues of concern which we hope to highlight in the journal include the impact of anti-terrorism and national security laws on political rights and freedom of speech; current issues relating to the rights of ethnic and religious minority communities; the role of the region's media in public debate about security and human rights; and the efforts of social movements to enhance human rights around the Asia Pacific region. We welcome suggestions on topics for inclusion in the journal. - jb."

[Extract: "One must avoid an over-interpretation and an over-assessment of the suspected car bomb explosion outside the Australian Embassy at Jakarta on September 9,2004, which caused the death of nine persons and injuries to over a hundred others, most of them innocent civilians. 2. The post-9/11 breed of Al Qaeda watchers tend to hype every act of terrorism and project it as the outcome of a grand strategy of the Al Qaeda and as evidence of its octopusian nature, thereby creating an unwarranted perception of its continuing anti-State potency and the seeming helplessness of the State in countering it. By doing so, they tend to play into its hands and give it an image, which would help it in its self-perpetuation." - b.raman]

The Park Era: A Reassessment After 25 Years - 2004 marks the 25th year since Park's assassination, and yet his legacy lives on, underlining the position of great importance the Park era holds in South Korea's development as a nation. The Republic of Korea has been guided by five administrations over the past 25 years, but among these it is the Park administration that marks the turning point in Korea's modernization, and South Korea today is in many respects the product of that era. The Park regime was, furthermore, a central player and agent in the political, economic and social conflicts that mark the period and drew much of the world's attention to the peninsula. It is therefore essential to our understanding of South Korea as a modern democracy and economic powerhouse that we reassess this administration.
We are delighted to announce the details of our forthcoming international conference and we very much look forward to your attendance at this important event. We have an excellent line-up of speakers to discuss and reflect upon some of the key questions that need to be examined about how Korean culture, psychology, democracy and national infrastructure has come to be what it is today.
