Cultures, Nations, Identities and Migrations [in Asia-Pacific], Apr 2004

Supplied note: "2004 Humanities Research Centre Conference. Sponsored by NISSL (National Institute for Social Sciences and Law) 'Cultures, Nations, Identities and Migrations', Venue: Humanities Research Centre, Old Canberra House #73, Lennox Crossing, The Australian National University, Canberra ACT, Australia 15-16 April 2004
Much of the rhetoric of identity and difference carries implicit assumptions of ontological distinctions. Identities, however, involve recognition, imagining as well as processes of construction and contestation. The Asia Pacific region is a site of old forms of cosmopolitanism (in parts of Asia) as well as sites of localized and particularistic identities. How are (relatively new) national identities expressed in the context of regionalism, localism and new forms of personal identity? How are identities reworked in the process of migration? The conference will bring together discussion of Asia, Australia and the Pacific in order to understand the ways in which identities are recognized, contested, dislodged and reconstituted in the contemporary world. The primary purpose of H-ASIA is to enable historians and other Asia scholars to easily communicate current research and teaching interests; to discuss new articles, books, papers, approaches, methods and tools of analysis; to test new ideas and share comments and tips on teaching. H-Asia is especially committed to discussing region wide, comparative and professional issues important to scholars of Asia."
Site contents: * General Information: (Subscribe!, Manage Subscription, Subscription Help, About H-Asia, Welcome Message Editors & Board); * H-Asia Resources (Discussion Logs, Discussion Threads, Resources, Links, Electronic Journals, KIAPS); * Related Lists: (H-Japan, H-USJapan, H-ANZAU, H-SEASIA); * Search H-Asia Logs; *Search all H-Net Logs; * Recent Book Reviews published by H-Asia; * Recent messages posted by H-Asia.
[The list, initially addressing no more than 12 readers, was first conceived and created by Steven A. Leibo of the Sage Colleges & Suny-Albany and Frank F. Conlon of the University of Washington. (See also "Asian Studies Online: a Timeline of Major Developments", coombs.anu.edu.au/asian-studies-timeline.html) The fledgeling H-Asia underwent a series of tests from the 15th of March 1994 onwards, and it went fully public on the 31st March of that year. During the 10 years of its exemplary operations the H-Asia list has disseminated over 22,000 posts, and now connects over 3500 subscribers. There is no doubt that H-Asia constitues the single most valuable, most useful and most seminal Asian Studies' resource available on the Net.
On the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of H-Asia, "The Asian Studies WWW Monitor" salutes and congratulates the H-Asia's editors - Frank Conlon, University of Washington (List Editor); Linda Dwyer, independent scholar (List Editor); Robert Entenmann, St. Olaf College (Review Editor); Sumit Guha, Brown University (Review Editor); Steven Leibo, The Sage Colleges & Suny-Albany (Web Editor, List Editor); Marilyn Levine, Lewis-Clark State College (List Editor); Ming-te Pan, SUNY Oswego (List Editor) as well as the members of H-Asia Advisory Board - Philip Brown of the Ohio State University and Yone Sugita of the Osaka University of Foreign Studies. Chinese Archery Archive
Asian Traditional Archery Research Network, Hong Kong, China
Self-description: "The Asian Traditional Archery Research Network provides for mutual friendly exchange and support among the different archery traditions of Asia, and to widen appreciation worldwide of the different archery traditions of Asia. The archery traditions of Asia (for example those of Mongolia, China, Korea, Tibet and Japan) have at one time or another enjoyed cross-fertilization and exchange of techniques (albeit sometimes on the battlefield.) Now some of these great traditions have disappeared, while others flourish, but in isolation. The archery traditions of Asia are rich in folklore, history, artistic expression, philosophy, technique, science and technology. Some, however, are in danger. In some Asian regions, the influence of western materialistic culture threatens to cause a loss of interest among potential new exponents. Sometimes, it is the craft of the bow and arrow makers which is under threat because of the dying-out of skills or the disappearance of sources of traditional materials."
"The Chinese Archery Archive page is a sub-site of 'ATARN, the Asian Traditional Archery Research Network [www.atarn.org]', covering much more than only China [ATARNet Discussion Forum; Bibliography; Picture Archive; Folklore; Mongolia/Khitan; Korea; Magyar; China; India & Sri Lanka; Islamic/Middle East; Tibet/Bhutan; Japan/Kyudo; Manchu/Sibo - ed.] There is also a very active forum. The entries differ very much from each other, there are reprinted articles, translations, excerpts from personal communication, richly illustrated texts on mechanisms (like the crossbow or the archer's rings). Although the last update was 24 January, 2002, the highly specialized content of the site is very interesting, not only to archery freaks. - hl."

Asian Currents e-bulletin
Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA), Australia.
Supplied note: "I am writing to tell you about a new monthly e-bulletin, 'Asian Currents' [ISSN 1449-4418], to which you may like to subscribe. It is published by the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) [http://coombs.anu.edu.au/ASAA] with a view to encouraging greater attention to Asian studies in Australia which, regrettably, face an insecure future. The core of Asian expertise in the universities is shrinking and student opportunities to study Asia are declining just at the time when greater knowledge of Asia is an essential element in preserving Australia's security and enhancing its prosperity.
The contents of the first bulletin, published this week, are:
* About the ASAA * Maximising Australia's Asian Knowledge * Korea: analysis by Professor Tessa Morris-Suzuki * Diary dates: ASAA biennial conference and Press Club Luncheon in June [2004] * Researcher of the month: Robert Cribb * Student of the month: Linda Rae Bennett * Website of the month: Asian Studies Virtual Library * Congratulations: RMIT International University Vietnam * Recent article of interest: Asian language study and Australian security * Feedback

Hunt for bin Laden & Co in South Waziristan

[Excerpt: "10. If bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri are hiding in the South Waziristan area as is generally speculated about, there has to be a sizable number of Arabs--mainly Saudis, Yemenis and Egyptians---meant for their protection from the so-called 055 Brigade of Al Qaeda in the area. there are so far no reports of the presence of such a large number of Arabs in that area. 11. According to available information, the foreigners present there (about 100, but Pakistani officials say 400) are mainly Chechens led by one Daniar, Uzbecks, led by Tahir Yuldesh, head of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, and Uighurs from the Xinjiang province of China and the Central Asian Republics. Amongst the local tribal chiefs, Nek Mohammad, Sharif Khan, Nur Islam, Maulvi Abbas and Maulvi Aziz, have been in the forefront of the anti-Pakistani and anti-US resistance. While the Arabs of Al Qaeda, particularly those meant for the protection of bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri, have been discouraged by their supervisors from marrying local women, many of the Chechens, Uzbecks and Uighurs have married local women and produced children. The local tribals do not look upon them as foreigners. Instead, they look upon them as their own and are not prepared to co-operate with the Pakistani forces by handing them over. " - b. raman.]
