The periodical forms a key element of the global, cooperative project Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library. For further details see a page About the Asian Studies WWW Monitor. The journal is complemented by its sister publication Pacific Studies WWW Monitor which was established in April 2000.

Pacific And Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC)
Distributed, Australia
Supplied note: "PARADISEC is a cross-institutional collaborative project for digital archiving and access to Australian researchers’ field recordings of endangered languages and musics of the Asia-Pacific region. It is hosted by the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University. - nt."
Self-description; "Australia lies within a region of great linguistic and cultural diversity. Over 2000 of the world's 6000 different languages are spoken in Australia, the South Pacific Islands (including around 900 languages in New Guinea alone) and Southeast Asia. Within the next century this number is likely to drop to a few hundred. The majority of these 2000 languages and their associated cultural expressions such as music are very poorly documented. Even in those languages that have begun to be documented many of the most developed cultural expressions (such as the dense and highly allusive language used in song) have never been studied.
PARADISEC (Pacific And Regional Archive for DIgital Sources in Endangered Cultures) offers a facility for digital conservation and access for endangered materials from the Pacific region, defined broadly to include Oceania and East and Southeast Asia. At present no such facility exists, and our research group is examining feasible models to ensure that the archive can provide access to interested communities, and conforms with emerging international standards for digital archiving.
In 2003 we aim to establish a framework for accessioning, cataloguing, and digitising audio, text and visual material, and preserving digital copies. The primary focus of this initial stage is safe preservation of material that would otherwise be lost, especially field tapes from the 1950s and 1960s."
Site contents: Data & Equipment (Data Preservation, Information discovery, Intellectual property issues, Cultural renewal, Technicalities, Recording Equipment); Services (Digitisation of audio and material, CD production. Training in the documentation techniques of recording, data management, and data linkage. Safe backup of digital data); Events; Future Directions; Deposit/Access; Profile; Links (Digitisation and Digital links, Pacific Languages and Resources, Digital Image and Video Collections, Endangered music and languages, Archives and Archiving, Linguistics Software, Annotation, Dictionaries, Metadata, Audio Preservation, Restoration and Access to Recordings, Digitisation and Audio Equipment, Software); Contact; Downloads (the PARADISEC access form, the PARADISEC deposit form, an information form for Depositors, the PARADISEC metadata set, PARADISEC information leaflet, the PARADISEC PowerPoint Presentation, Dr Linda Barwick's paper on PARADISEC from the 2003 OZeCulture Conference, PARADISEC's public profile document).

Although far from complete it is much more useful than the outdated "Intelligent Database for Standard Chinese Computer Terminology" (http://ccts.cs.cuhk.edu.hk/) by the Hong Kong Computer Society and was originally set up to incoporate especially those words not included there.
Contents: Alphabetically ordered word-list on one single page, English-Chinese, also including variants for Hong Kong and Taiwan. - Matthias Arnold."

Bibliography of Translations from the Chinese Buddhist Canon into Western Languages
Digital Buddhist Library and Museum, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan
Self-description: "This is a working bibliography of translations from the Chinese Canon with the aim of later inputting these to enable parallel reading of the original and the translation. Generally, I have limited it to translations that were done from the Chinese, or with the help of a Chinese version (in case of doubt they were included). Translations from languages other than Chinese were in principle not included or mentioned only in passim. As for target languages, 'western' means every European language. A bibliography of translations into Japanese, Korean, Tibetan or modern Chinese, though of course desirable, does so far exceed our resources. The biggest gaps are in Chan/Zen-related texts, translations done in the nineties, and translations that appeared as articles."
The bibliography is compiled by Marcus Bingenheimer Last update on February 2002. - ed. "The translations are sorted by Taisho number, Chinese characters and Pinyin are also given. This site is part of the 'CBS Comprehensive Online Buddhist Resources' (http://ccbs.ntu.edu.tw/) [...] . - Matthias Arnold."

E-Tutor for the Sanskrit
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India
Supplied note: "I am writing to draw your attention to a tutor for the Sanskrit Language that a student of mine and I have created. The software is freely downloadable from our website [see below - ed.].
The version which is presented at this time is intended for IBM PCs under Windows; but since the package has been created in Java - a platform-neutral programming language - a little modification will enable it to be run on any type of computer that can be used to surf the web. (The only reason why I cannot at this time provide a version for the Apple, or other type of computer, is because I don't have access to any but IBM PCs.)
The package is not quite complete, yet. At this time we are offering four Chapters and a section on diacritics; but more will shortly be added. (Even this means 1.5 million lines of code, however!) I will be grateful if you can visit the website, download the tutor, and give me the benefit of your opinion. - sk."
Site contents: About; Chapter Previews; Introduction; Vowels; Consonants; Conjuncts; Word Building; Sandhi; The Sanskrit; Verbs; Declensions; Special Cases; Simple Sentences; Credits; Download the Software
