"The Asian Studies WWW Monitor" (ISSN 1329-9778) was established 21 April 1994. The journal, a pioneering and the only publication of this kind in the world, provides daily abstracts and reviews of new/updated online resources of significance to research, teaching and communications dealing with Asian Studies. It is published by the Internet Publications Bureau, RSPAS, National Institute for Asia and the Pacific, ANU. The periodical forms a key element of the global, cooperative project Asian Studies WWW Virtual Library. For further details see a page About the Asian Studies WWW Monitor. The journal is complemented by its sister publication Pacific Studies WWW Monitor which was established in April 2000.

Daily contents' summaries and evaluations published in the web edition of the Journal are disseminated also on the network via a mailing list.

Supplied note: "The Zhang zhung Studies Forum is an interdisciplinary academic and scholarly forum designed to promote discussion and exchange of information, and more in particular of new research data, on the broad topic of Zhang zhung and so-called 'early Bon culture'. It invites expertise about the regions of larger Western Tibet (which besides present-day mNga' ris also includes parts of North India such as northern regions in Himachal Pradesh; north-western Nepal; Ladakh; and the like) and relevant bordering regions, such as, other ethnic Tibetan regions of China, ethnic Chinese regions in the western provinces of China, the Himalayan range, Central Asia, and areas to the west of western Tibet. Participation is encouraged from all relevant disciplines, such as anthropology, archaeology, geography, history, linguistics, natural sciences, religious studies, sociology, textual studies, etc. Participation in this forum implies that intellectual rights to research data and unpublished materials that are shared on the forum will be respected and submissions will be properly referenced when quoted (forum, author, title (if available) and date). Supplied note: "The University of Michigan announces its Summer Study Abroad program for Tibetan Studies, now in its fourth year. This unique opportunity offers undergraduate students a comprehensive nine week, six credit program for the study of Tibetan language, history, and culture, situated in Tibet. It combines two weeks in Tibet's capital Lhasa and neighboring urban areas, two weeks in various rural areas on the high plateau of Central Tibet (the Tibetan Autonomous Region), and four weeks of intensive field-study in one of Tibet's unique cultural regions to the east or south. Course topics range from Tibetan language, Buddhism, and traditional religious history to contemporary cultural and social issues. The program makes use of leading Tibetan and Western experts residing in Lhasa, extended visits to central Tibetan religious and historical sites, and field-work projects in various settings. The first of its kind to be offered by any academic institution in the United States, the program traverses the breadth of the Tibet's variegated landscapes and diverse cultures. The dates for the Summer 2004 program are May 19 to July 19.

Drifting Toward The Southeast

Supplied note: "The story of John Manjiro, .The man who opened Japan to the West,' is being told in a new book called "Drifting Toward the Southeast," published by Spinner Publications of New Bedford, Massachusetts. The book is the first complete, fully-illustrated, English language translation of the Hyoson Kiryaku, an 1852 manuscript hand-recorded in four brush-written volumes. It is based on the court testimony of Manjiro and his companions upon their return to Japan after 10 years in the West. Manjiro was the first known Japanese visitor to the United States, and his observations became the image of America held by the Japanese during a period of isolation in their country. - cm."
