By mid-2002, the unemployment rate had reached more than 7%. Are the economic ills now confronting Hong Kong transient, or, are they symptoms of larger and longer problems to come? How can the HKSAR Government and community strengthen Hong Kong's economic future? "

Dear Asian Studies Colleagues,

About 22.30 (Canberra Time), Thu 7 Nov 2002 the email edition (asia-www-monitor@coombs.anu.edu.au) of "The Asian Studies WWW Monitor" became a target of an electronic attack which seems to be coming from a host "211.99.136.248", that is from a hitherto unknown machine located, apparently, in People's Republic of China.

As the result, all current 2350 subscribers to our electronic service have been exposed to a flood of pointless and possibly virus-carrying email messages.

My deep apologies to all of you for this unpleasant situation.

As an interim counter-measure, on the morning of Fri 8th November, the entire asia-www-monitor@coombs.anu.edu.au mailing list has been taken OFF LINE (i.e. it has ceased to exist). This should help to isolate and trace the vandal's activities more speedily.

I will personally notify each of The Monitor's subscribers if and when the email facility is going to be reactivated. Meanwhile, please continue to use the web-edition of The Monitor (coombs.anu.edu.au/asia-www-monitor.html).

- with warm regards -

T. Matthew Ciolek, Editor.

Chinese Text Sampler
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, USA
Supplied note: "The [...] Sampler provides a selection of 50 carefully chosen, short, well-known Chinese texts for the use of students of the language who want to hone their reading skills while improving their cultural literacy. The goal is to offer a more eclectic and potentially accessible 'sampling' of a wide range of culturally significant texts, both traditional and modern, high-brow and low, than is currently available elsewhere. In addition to Confucius, Du Fu, and Lu Xun, then, the site also introduces Jin Yong, Lao She, Qiu Jin, and Li Qingzhao, as well as well-known folk songs, popular children's stories, and important historical documents. A brief introduction in English is provided for each entry, and each text is available both as an html document for viewing with a web browser and as a GB-coded text file for downloading and reading with other software. In addition, each text is graded according to the difficulty of the vocabulary it contains, so that students (and teachers) can choose reading materials at the appropriate level - dp."
