Middle East Virtual Library's On-Line Databases
Martin-Luther-Universitaet Halle-Wittenberg, Germany
Supplied note: "The Middle East Virtual Library (MENALIB) has added to its services the periodical contents database MENAcontents. This database currently contains tables of contents (TOC's) of 121 scholarly periodicals related to Middle East and Islamic studies with approximately 19,000 articles. More TOC's of journals published in Latin and in Middle Eastern scripts will be added in the future, using an automated method based on the Unicode character set. The database has been designed to encourage cooperative work on Middle East related TOC-services in the future: libraries all over the world can contribute by feeding in / scanning in, via web-interface, TOC's of periodicals and information on their actual holdings of the titles, so that orders can be sent directly to the library that has a particular item in stock. Another database offered by MENALIB is also open to contributions by scholars, students and librarians alike: ALMISBAH - MENALIB's database of relevant Internet resources for Middle East studies. - lw."

BBC has a photo report [7 pages long - ed.] by photo journalist Jeroen Bouman inside the illegal Chinese workshops where young teenagers work long hours amid noxious fumes, recycling computers from the US and Europe. The industry has turned four villages in Guiyu, Guangdong province, into toxic waste tips. Drinking water is now brought by lorries from 30 kilometres away.
