The Empire that was Russia: The Prokudin-Gorskii Photographic Record Recreated
Library of Congress, Washington, DC, USA
Supplied note: "Dear friends and colleagues, You may remember my recommendation of a few months back to take a look at the Library of Congress website: 'The Empire that was Russia [...]' It provides some striking [manually reconstructed] color views of Central Asia and the Caucasus taken [as three separate black-and-white glass-plate images, each through a different filter (red, green, or blue) - ed.] by this Russian photographer [... between 1907 to 1915 - ed.]. Since then, the LC has provided a searchable database for the whole collection [of 1,903 images] in b&w at: lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/prokquery.html They are still working out some of the subject indexing issues, but it is highly useful. Relatively rough color images [synthetised by a computer program by Frank Dellaert - ed.] for the whole collection are now available at: www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~dellaert/aligned/ Furthermore, Russell Manning has posted his [automatic recombination of separated color channels of] color renderings at: www.cs.wisc.edu/~rmanning/homepage/research/prokudin-gorsky/ I trust you will find these interesting. Best, Jeff."

International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS), Aug 2003
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Asia Research Institute, The National University of Singapore, Singapore.
Self-description: "About ICAS3, 19-22 August 2003, Singapore. The International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is one of the largest regular gatherings of scholars whose research centres on Asia and/or Asians, especially in the humanities and social sciences. Asian studies at the start of the new millennium is increasingly cross-disciplinary and inter-regional in character, a positive development which ICAS both demonstrates and seeks to further. Convened in Leiden, the Netherlands in 1998, and Berlin, Germany in 2001, the next conference (ICAS3) will take place in Singapore in August 2003, jointly hosted and organised by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore. The Organising Committee, ICAS3, is pleased to invite the participation of scholars in any Asia-related field of research. Proposals for panels, individual papers, poster presentations and special meetings are now being accepted - see Call for Papers. Over 1,000 scholars from around the world are expected to participate in ICAS3. Early registration is now open."
