Author: Berlie, Jean A.

Title: East Timor. A bibliography. Paris, Les Indes Savantes, 2001. 225p., map, photos. ISBN 2846540128.

Coverage: A rather idiosyncratic bibliography dealing with a wide range of subjects on East Timor (and to some extent Indonesia) from history and ethnology to contemporary politics. There is a focus on political issues. Includes entries not only for books and articles, but also archival sources and diplomatic documents (from which the author frequently quotes). There is a healthy use of sources in languages other than English, including lists of articles from Le Monde and Le Monde Diplomatique.

No. of items: 730 books and articles, with numerous other periodical articles which are unnumbered.

Structure: Arranged into the following categories: bibliographies, unpublished documents or theses, dictionaries, serials, generalities/travel, history, economy and agriculture, ethnology, religion, law, politics and military affairs, regional affairs and archives. Most of the entries have original and unique descriptive annotations. There is an author index.

Evaluation: A useful, timely working bibliography based on the author's own wide-range of interests. It is a valuable addition to the further bibliographical control of material on this newly-emerged state.
