[In 1903, R. Harvey Sargent, a topographer with the U.S. Geological Survey, joined
a Carnegie Institution research mission that took him 1,800 miles across the vast interior of China. Along the way, Sargent documented his observations with photographs of the land and the peasants from which the Chinese Revolution was to come.
The core of this exhibit consists of 75 of these original photographs, which have been enlarged and reproduced to museum standards.]

[The Colonial World Fairs collection consists of over 5800 objects collected in the Netherlands East Indies between 1870 and 1940.
At that time, the country now known as Indonesia was regarded unquestioningly as part of the Netherlands. The aim of the collection was to increase public knowledge about this exotic region. Colonial World Fairs [staged in the period 1880-1931 - ed.] gave large numbers of people the opportunity to become acquainted with their own colonies. It was quite clear how the Netherlands saw the East Indies. And it was equally clear how the Netherlands saw itself - or wanted to see itself.]

This guidebook shows routes to Nanking in those days, and introduces tourist spots with photographs like the ruin of Ming Palace in Nanking. Short commentaries are attached to each photo. It contains some photos of ruins which has now been lost."]

Totaling 340 photographs and postcards gathered by Warner between August 26, 1937 and March 8, 1941, these images provide a snapshot of Taiwan's hybrid culture of Chinese, Taiwanese, Austronesian, and Japanese influences. The subjects represented are wide-ranging, including clothing, arboriculture, urban structures, agriculture, religious rituals, topography, highways, parks, and more. [Gertrude Bell (1868-1926) worked for British Intelligence during the First World War, later, as a Political Officer, and then as Oriental Secretary to the High Commissioner in Baghdad, she became a king-maker in the new state of Iraq, which she had helped to create. [...] The Gertrude Bell papers consist of about 1,600 detailed and lively letters to her parents, of her 16 diaries, which she kept while she was travelling, and of c. 40 packets of miscellaneous items. There are also about 7,000 photographs, taken by her c. 1900-1918. Those of Middle Eastern archaeological sites are of great value because they record structures which have since been eroded or, in some cases, have disappeared altogether, while those of the desert tribes are of considerable anthropological and ethnographical interest. [The photographs archived here come from the collections of a Chinese diplomat, foreign businessmen, staff of the administrations in the Chinese treaty ports, missionaries, and officials of the Chinese Maritime Customs Service. They shed light on political events such as the 1925 May Thirtieth incident, on working and social life, on treaty port architecture, commercial history, the history of dress and fashion, and of course the history of photography in China. They were taken by talented amateur photographers, by foreign snap-shotters, professional studio photographers, and others. These images were taken, acquired or bought by those living or visiting China.
These digital copies of the images are made available here for educational, reference and research purposes. As well as a variety of modestly sized collections, this project has worked with a number of larger bodies of material including photographs related to the Chinese Maritime Customs Service, diplomat Foo Ping-sheung (Fu Bingchang), holdings relating to the Shanghai Municipal Police, the G. Warren Swire collection, and the J.C. Oswald collection (SOAS).]

[The Netherlands transferred sovereignty to Indonesia on 27 December 1949.
In January and February 1947, the photographers and friends Cas Oorthuys and Charles Breijer both travelled to Indonesia independently and captured various stages of the decolonisation process. Oorthuys returned to the Netherlands by the end of March, while Breijer stayed on until 1953, the last three years as a filmmaker for the Indonesian Ministry of Information. Lex de Herder was sent to Indonesia as a conscript at the beginning of 1949, where he worked first as a radio announcer and later as a photographer. The collection contains more than 4500 photographs and album pages by these photographers.]

[An exhibit of 39 color images of rare colored lantern slides taken by two young American explorers, Janet E. and Frederick R. Wulsin, Jr., from the collections of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard U.. Janet was one of the first American women explorers to reach western China, Inner Mongolia, and Tibet. Together they produced this series of superb photographs of the Ta'er, Labuleng and Zhuoni lamaseries, religious ceremonies, and landscapes they encountered during their expedition for the National Geographic Society in 1923.]
