Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, The Australian National University, Canberra, Australia

Between Mar 1994 and early Jun 2006 it was operating from coombs.anu.edu.au address and it was called "Pacific-Islands-L." Currently it has over 330 subscribers (all carried over from the old, coombs.anu.edu.au address), mainly from universities and research institutes. Please note the list's new address, namely, pacific-islands@anu.edu.au To subscribe, or view the list's new features (which include an archive of prior postings), please use the forum's home page, at the URL below.

Asia Pacific Mediation Forum (APMF) Conference, Jun 2006
Pacific Institute of Advanced Studies in Development and Governance, University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji.
Supplied note: "The University of the South Pacific's (USP) Pacific Institute of Advanced Studies in Development and Governance (PIAS-DG) is pleased to announce that the ASIA PACIFIC MEDIATION FORUM (APMF) CONFERENCE will take place June 19th-30th [2006] on the USP campus in Suva, Fij. The Conference includes two days of pre-conference workshops and three days of conference presentations, panels and symposia. Two accredited basic-mediation courses will be held early, June 19st-23rd, the week before the primary conference activities begin. The programme will be uploaded soon on the conference website [at the url below]
The theme of the conference, 'Mediating Cultures of the Pacific and Asia', has been received enthusiastically by such leaders as Chief John Momis, former Governor of Bougainville and 'the father of the Papua New Guinea's constitution', who has agreed to give one of the keynote addresses.
The Conference and workshops are being held as a contribution toward capacity development in mediation skills in the Pacific and Asia and to promote constructive conflict resolution practices. The conference will highlight mediation methodologies that have evolved in the Pacific and will build a network of mediation practitioners throughout this region, Asia and beyond. Conference outcomes are expected to enhance democratic processes by increasing civil society's as well as government institution's capacity for peaceful dialogue and cooperation. The Conference is an initiative of PIAS-DG's Peace and Conflict Studies Program.
Complete conference registration and accommodation information can be found on the website. Please contact Laura Seurynck at seurynck_l--at--usp.ac.fj or Professor Graham Hassall at Hassall_g--at--usp.ac.fj for additional queries. - ls."
