Pacific And Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures (PARADISEC)
Distributed, Australia
Supplied note: "PARADISEC is a cross-institutional collaborative project for digital archiving and access to Australian researchers’ field recordings of endangered languages and musics of the Asia-Pacific region. It is hosted by the University of Sydney, the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University. - nt."
Self-description; "Australia lies within a region of great linguistic and cultural diversity. Over 2000 of the world's 6000 different languages are spoken in Australia, the South Pacific Islands (including around 900 languages in New Guinea alone) and Southeast Asia. Within the next century this number is likely to drop to a few hundred. The majority of these 2000 languages and their associated cultural expressions such as music are very poorly documented. Even in those languages that have begun to be documented many of the most developed cultural expressions (such as the dense and highly allusive language used in song) have never been studied.
PARADISEC (Pacific And Regional Archive for DIgital Sources in Endangered Cultures) offers a facility for digital conservation and access for endangered materials from the Pacific region, defined broadly to include Oceania and East and Southeast Asia. At present no such facility exists, and our research group is examining feasible models to ensure that the archive can provide access to interested communities, and conforms with emerging international standards for digital archiving.
In 2003 we aim to establish a framework for accessioning, cataloguing, and digitising audio, text and visual material, and preserving digital copies. The primary focus of this initial stage is safe preservation of material that would otherwise be lost, especially field tapes from the 1950s and 1960s."

South Pacific region: indicative research priorities
Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), Canberra, Australia
Self-description: "South Pacific region: indicative research priorities Priorities for collaborative agricultural research between ACIAR and its Pacific Island country partners (Fiji, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Vanuatu and Kiribati) were discussed on 9-10 December 2003 in Suva at a consultation with representatives of Regional Organisations (including SPC and University of the South Pacific), relevant Government Ministries and Agencies, NGOs and CGIAR centres active in the region.
ACIAR's strategy in these Pacific Island Countries addresses the significant challenges of WTO accession, quarantine- and biosecurity-related issues, product quality, scale of production, and remoteness of export markets. We will maintain a mixture of research on cash-generating crops, fishing and forestry with emphases on supply chain issues (including value-adding and marketing) and production sustainability. Projects will emphasise technologies that are appropriate to smallholders, and address institutional issues affecting technology uptake. The limited research capability in the region, especially in individual nations, is an ongoing constraint. ACIAR will therefore work closely with regional organisations, especially the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), in executing projects. ACIAR also supports collaboration by Pacific Island countries with International Agricultural Research Centres such as the WorldFish Center and the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute.
Agreed priorities are listed under selected ACIAR program areas:
Crop Sciences [details follow - ed.]; Fisheries and Livestock [details follow - ed.]; Forestry [details follow - ed.]; Agricultural Economics [details follow - ed.]. [...] File size: 74.50 kb."

Pacific Islands Photos and Clipart
Aha! Clip Art.com, USA?
Self-description: "Click below for the best clipart anywhere... All professional, all copyright-safe, all about everything!"
Supplied note: "Some of you may be interested in a site I have come across that has a number of photos and a fair bit of Pacific Islands clip art (listed under Oceania): [see the URL below] Some of the photos are interesting old pictures, while the clip art includes maps, country flags, little logos and so on.
There is a snag, it is a subscription site (from a week to a year on a sliding scale from US$9.95-2.88 per week). But if someone had one or more presentations to do or wanted a particular illustration to use in a publication, the fee seems modest enough, as they are advertised as royalty-free.
The categories listed are Australia, Tasmania (as a separate category, yet!), NZ, Fiji, PNG, Samoa and Indonesia. However, I noticed a lot of images from all over the place (Cooks, Easter Island etc) under the PNG heading. - re."
