Self-description: "[The SSGM] Project is the leading centre for research into contemporary issues of governance in Melanesia. Launched in 1996 the SSGM Project's key objectives are to: * encourage scholarship on governance and state-society relations * generate dialogue throughout Melanesia and the Pacific Islands on these issues * assist in bridging policy and research.
The Project's research and outreach focuses on island Melanesia - Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji; on the culturally-related region to the west including Papua/Irian Jaya and Timor; and on the countries of the Pacific Islands region to the north and east."
