Self-description:
"The Association [est. Aug 2002 - ed.] is meant to be an academic and professional organization for those who are engaged in teaching and research in the field of Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka. The Buddhist studies in Sri Lanka are carried out, mostly, in an isolated manner, by individual scholars or by small groups of scholars associated with the departments of Buddhist studies of the Sri Lanka university system. It was felt that there must be more inter-action and co-operation among these scholars with a view to bringing about more benefit to the to the field of study as well as the scholars themselves. [...] The goals of the Association, [...], are: to function as the united Organization of Buddhist scholars and professional in Sri Lanka for the purpose of the advancement of Buddhist studies and research in the field; fostering interaction and cooperation among Buddhist scholars, professionals and academic organizations; to strengthen the bases of Buddhist education, and to disseminate Buddhist teachings within and outside Sri Lanka."
