National Museum of Oriental Art "Giuseppe Tucci"
National Museum of Oriental Art, Rome, Italy.
Self-description:
"Established in 1957 by decree of the President of the Republic, the Museum was open to the public in 1958. On May 2005 it was dedicated to Giuseppe Tucci (1894-1984) who promoted its foundation and was one of the most important orientalists in twentieth-century. The Museum is one of the Special Institutes of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities, as it carries out tasks of protection and conservation of artistic and archaeological objects from Asian Countries, it controls the customs transit of cultural goods in cooperation with the Local Superintendencies, it tries to avoid the dispersal of state and private collections, it gives advices to State Institutions within matters of its competence and it promotes the knowledge of Asian culture organizing exhibitions, lectures and guided visits to its collections.
The nucleus of the collections is composed by the findings lodged by the former Italian Institute for the Middle and the Far East (IsMEO), today Italian Institute for Africa and the East (IsIAO) [http://www.isiao.it/], coming from its archaeological missions in Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, together with goods bought by G. Tucci between 1928 and 1954 in Nepal and Tibet. The property has been gradually growing thanks to State purchases from private owners, to donations made by private citizens or public institutes as well as to exchanges with several Asian Countries.
During the years, the Museum also got new structures, useful to its activities: a specialized Library, a Restoration Workshop, a Photo Archive, an Archive of oriental collections in Italy, a Bioarchaeology and Electronic Microscopy Department and an Educational Service."
