The National Bureau of Asian Research conducted a comprehensive study from 2004 to 2007 on the socio-political impact of Islamic education in five Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, and the Philippines. Building on the first two years of research, the essays in this issue are the products of the project's third year (2006-07) focus on the relationship between Islamic education and professional associations in Indonesia and Malaysia, Southeast Asia's two largest and most influential Muslim-majority countries.
