Self-description: "The Institute of Russian, East European & Central Asian Studies (IREECAS) under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is one of the institutes of CASS specializing in international studies. Preparations for its setting up began in July 1964, and it was formally established in March 1965. [...] The functions of the IEERCAS [sic] are to conduct systematic basic research on politics, economy, foreign relations, culture, education and other areas in Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asian republics, and engage in certain applied research, so as to serve China's socialist modernization drive and its reform and opening-up, and to promote mutual understanding and friendly cooperation between China and various countries in this region. At present, the institute has a total staff of 150, including 80 research personnel."
