"In 2003, the Japan Foundation, in cooperation with the Australia-Japan Research Centre (AJRC) at the Australian National University, conducted a survey on the state of Japanese studies in Australia and New Zealand. This survey was designed to constitute part of a continuing project initiated by the Japan Foundation to create a worldwide database providing a comprehensive picture of the state of Japanese studies in various countries around the world. This 'Directory of Japanese Studies in Australia and New Zealand' is the outcome of the 20[0]3 survey and is intended to update the previous edition published in 1997."
