"Douglas Brooks, who specializes in the construction of replica boats for museums and municipalities, has been studying traditional Japanese boatbuilding since 1990. He has apprenticed to four boatbuilders in Japan (1996, 2001, 2002, 2003) and has published many magazine articles and one book on his research. You can learn more about his research in Japan and see the boats he has built there by visiting his website. - db."
Self-description: "In 1996 Brooks apprenticed with the last man still building the tarai bune (tub boat) of Sado Island, Niigata-ken. In 2000 he built a beka bune (seaweed gathering boat) in Urayasu, Chiba-ken."
