Its mission is to establish, present, preserve and document a permanent collection that reflects the vitality, complexity and historical significance of Himalayan art and to create exhibitions and programs designed to explore connections with other world cultures.
Supplied note: "In case you haven't already heard, Manhattan is to have its first major museum dedicated to Himalayan art and culture - the Rubin Museum of Art or RMA. It opens on Oct 2nd [2004] with a spectacular program of events, [...]. The program includes a list of 26 Hollywood films featuring Himalayan themes, intended as a complement to Columbia's series of films from Tibet this autum. The RMA series include Lost Horizon (showing Oct 9th), Black Narcissus (Oct 16th), Tintin in Tibet (Jan 9th) and the extraordinary British mini-series Jewel in the Crown (Feb 19th). The RMA is one of three outstanding Tibet-related institutions supported by the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation and housed in w 17th street [New York, NY], along with the Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center under the direction of Gene Smith, and the Himalayan Art Project, run by Jeff Watts. - rb."
